Just a thought, but what about keeping the chat window open whilst you are logged in?

You could say hey - i'm on-line and bye I have got to go there... wouldn't have to enter into full blown chat.

The only thing I can think of is something similar to the chat room a sort of "quick chat" along the lines of the quick reply box.. not sure if this is possible...
