Pop Up advertising
« on: September 30, 2002, 02:20:41 PM »
Hi Guys
I've noticed that when I first log onto the forum I now get a ad window pop up and try to sell me psoriasis products - have you noticed.

No, I haven't had that.

Am I missing something?

Hey Guys

No I don't get the pop-up, but I am sure Michael will look into it.

Hi Guy ;)

Absolutely nothing to do with me, honest.... This doesn't happen to me either. How are you accessing the web site???

Do you use any form filling software like Gator?? There are some Adware/Spyware software applications that you can download to your PC. They could be something like Gator or a file sharing program that is supported by advertising???

I have used Gator myself and what it does is make a note of searches you make and sites you visit on the internet and then it pops up adverts related to the site you are visiting etc..

You can run a free program on your PC called AdAware available from You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. This will tell you if you have any Adware or Spyware programs on your PC. It will enable you to delete these programs but if you do it will probably stop the programs they support working...

I can only think it is something like this... Please let me know some more details. If anybody else is experiencing this please also let me know.

There is definitely no advertising, paid for or otherwise, allowed on the site.

Thanks
Michael
:)

Nothing to see where I come from....
I'm probably missing it too

And I even tried with : Netscape, Internet Explorer and Opera.... so it can't be lack of trying  ;D ;D

But what I did notice to be different between all those browsers was:

Netscape doesn't show the smiley's on the "Post Reply" page
Netscape and IE display different members who are "supposed" to on-line, because it's not always correct.
Both Netscape and IE sometimes diplay nobody is chatting when they are

And maybe this would be a nice feature, I don't know if it is possible or not, but if one would be able to see what time somebody entered/left the chatroom would be a great help. I sometime log in and see a message like "Anybody there?? Well, I'll try later", but was that yesterday, this morning, 5 min ago?? Or can you see that, and haven't I found out yet??  ???

No, I haven't experienced that....

Guy, I agree with Michael on the AdAware programme, it's great.
I'm behind a firewall, and we have strict security settings, but even then the AdAware usually manages to find a little nasty beastie here and there when we run it.
Especially the "doubleclick"-cookies can sneak in without anyone noticing (they have something to do with advertising and remembering where you've been too  :P - whatever happened to the common decency of privacy?!  >:( ).

AdAware isn't an automatic programme, you have to install it and run it once in a while (we generally do that every two weeks or so, that keeps our pooter nicely clean :) )...
