I had the same "problem" when I first tried to use the smilies - but then I realized... AHAA, eet ees ze spezial feature of the new boord!!!
What happens is.....
You cursor will move around and make dialog boxes active, whether you click on them or not. I.E., when you hit reply, you get the reply form, where you can type your reply, but also change the subject. Try this: hit reply, and move your cursor from the "subject" box to the "reply" box - you'll see it becomes active whether you click on it or not.
Well, the same thing happens when you open your "more smilies" screen: the screen opens, you move you cursor out of the way to look at the smilies, and you happen to move over the "reply" box with your cursor. The reply box instantly becomes active, and the smillies screen moves to the background.
So, the workaround is..... when you open your "more smilies" screen, either just stay with your cursor on it, or, if you want to move it out of the way, move it down rather than to the right.
If you want to scroll down through the smilies, use the page down button or the arrows, rather than the scrollbar, as , to use the scrollbar, you need to move the cursor to the right - and if you move it just a fraction too far to the right, you'll move it over the "reply" box and the smilies will dissappear.....
Does that make any sense?

All this being said........ Michael, wouldn't it perhaps be easier to have the smilies always on top? Peeps could choose for themselves when they want to banish them to the background then.... Don't know whether it's technically possible though....
