Hello all,

I'm new to this forum, when it comes to posting anything, but I've always read the threads. I just wanted to share my success with Barney's formula - which has made me a very happy little man!

A quick brief; I've had p for around 7-8 years now, on my elbows, lower legs, torso and scalp. I had UVB treatment last feb but had a remission over the winter. My derm wouldn't give me a course this year so I looked into alternatives - and found Barney's!

As well as Barney's I have  cut out caffiene (tea&coffee), milk and cheese completely. I have also cut down on (although not completely) eggs, wheat and gluten. I still smoke :S and drink a lot, although trying to cut this down as well. I am definately eating a lot more fish, especially salmon and tuna, with a salad. I also read, maybe on here, about the benefits of olive oil and I am drenching it over my salads with a dressing as well.

Generally, I feel a lot better, in body & mind. On a different note, I suffer from IBS but my trips to the toilet have certainly improved since doing Barney's/diet change.

I used dovobet on the tough bits of p, like my elbows and legs, but only every couple of days. I moisterise in the morning and before bed, and any time inbetween if I can.

Of course, it is the summer, so I've been getting sun as well, which I'm sure helps a lot, but either way, my skin is certainly better than last summer. I think I might get a handheld uvb lamp in the winter, just incase I have a massive flare up - but until then! I also wore short sleeve t shirt to work the other day, something I haven't done in a long long time!

So, yes, just thought I'd share that and say a massive thank you to bjm!!

3 year update on Vit D/Ibuprofen.

I have been on this for 3 years now and thought I'd update with my progress for those who are just starting or who are thinking of starting..

My original posts are way way way back so I'll give a brief history.  I've had P for over 30 years, since I was a young child, had plaque constantly on my face with guttate coming and going on my arms, legs, torso and scalp.  I stopped prescription treatments in my 20's for idealistic reasons and just basically lived with it.

March 2007.  I started on 2000iu of Vit D and 400mg of Ibuprofen daily, first thing I noticed was an increased itch, it was really really bad.. so I split the dose of Vit D and took 500iu 4 times a day, taking the Ibuprofen after my evening meal.  This helped and after 6 months or so it disappeared completely even if I took the full dose in one go.

Week 2.  I had noticed some shrinkage and some reduction in the redness.

Week 4.  Really started to notice a difference about now, much more shrinkage and less red.  Flakeyness had been replaced by a dustyness, like a very fine body dandruff.

Week 6.  Huge difference by now.. Skin was very smooth, and tho shiny and slightly red in places there was a vast improvement.  Dustyness had gone, and so had that 'shrinking' feeling, my face didnt feel as tight as it had previously.  I also noticed a lessening of my 'superhuman' healing powers, cuts/scratches were taking weeks to heal up.

The Guttate on the rest of my body didnt have such a dramatic improvement, but did shrink and by August I was more or less clear.  Had 2 very small patches behind my ears and 3 or 4 very very small patches on my scalp, which in hindsight I think were only still there because of damage from hairbrushing was causing scabs which didnt heal properly.  During July/August 2007 I cut back my dosage of Vit D to 1500iu and increased it back to 2000iu in the september.

1 Year.  Still pretty clear on the face, with maybe one or two spots on my legs, but it should be noted that at this time I had split with my husband and moved back to Glasgow.  Was a pretty bad break-up and my stress levels were extremely high but only visible signs were the odd patch on my legs and scalp which only stayed a few days before going. My dosage was still consistant at 2000iu Vit D and 400mg Ibuprofen, I had noticed that if i missed the ibuprofen or reduced it then my skin got very red within a day or so which would recede within 48 hours if I then took it.  If I missed the Vit D then it would take a week or so before any change was noticable, patches around the nose would start growing and my skin would get very dry, and it would take a few days for it to clear once I resumed the Vit D again.  The longer I was off it, the longer it would take to get clear.

2 Years.   Completely clear both on face and body.  Moisturising is still necessary as my skin does dry up very quickly.  At this point I had my daily dosage reduced to 1500iu Vit D and 400mg Ibuprofen all year round.  One advantage I had found at this point was that I could now use any make-up, cleansing and moisturising products with no adverse effects, previously I was very limited in what I could use without causing a reaction or bleeding.

3 years.  Still pretty clear on the face although I do have the odd spot of Guttate on my body.  Mainly because I've reduced my dosage to 1000iu Vit D and 200mg Ibuprofen for the last month.  This is on the advice of my doc cos my skin is making more Vit D on its own now, and we had a lot of sun there a few weeks back and because my doc isnt too happy with me taking 400mg of Ibuprofen on a daily basis, so he'd like to get it down.  My skin still reacts to things, if i get upset I can be red all the next day, if I forget to take my tablets I can be red and/or dry for a few days but its so much more managable that it ever has been.  Excuse the bad pic here I took it a few moments ago with my webcam cos i can't find a recent pic on this pc.

Hi Anita,

Yes you are getting plenty enough magnesium, no need to worry though it is hard to OD on magnesium! your body will just get rid of the excess...better to have more than not enough.

Just a stab in the dark... but Your high level of Magnesium could be the reason the d3 works so well for you as the d3 is probably being utilized in the correct way thanks to the healthy levels of magnesium in your body.

What I've been taking and how long-

Vitamin D3 x 2,400iu softgel x 1 a day - 3 months
Omega 3 pure fish oil x 1000mg soft gel x 1 a day - 6 months
Oil of peppermint x 200mg soft gel x 1 a day - 6 months
Milk Thistle x 150mg tablet x 1 a day - 1 month
Korean Ginseng x 500mg soft gel x 1 a day - 1 month

And soon to include Magnesium x 250mg x 1 a day?
and will start on the Ibuprofen too.

Started and stopped using Dovobet in May and had a bad outbreak of Guttate after, which still seems to be lingering. Coconut oil and moisterisor daily has been helping with the flaking, but as of yet, I cant shift the redness or the patches.

Been out in the sun for a few weeks in June/ early July without sun cream for sessions of half hour front, half hour back and was tanning ok on upper body and Guttate was fading, but leg spots not shifting and now a couple weeks without sun, and the spots are already returning fast and widespread on upper body

To be honest, I've not been noticing any difference from using these supplements, which is possibly unfair due to using Dovobet inbetween and think much of my problems are still lingering from that rebound, but will add the other 2 and see how things pan out. Any other advice greatly appreciated please.

Hope you had a good w/e away from us 'grail seekers'!

Am up and running with the therapy now all in place.

Bj - Jamie's post prompt's a question; How do you feel about continuing with conventional treatments - steroidal creams etc. -
whils't undertaking the therapy? I am currently using curatoderm (tacalcitrol) and elocon(?), (without much effect it has to be said!) but am nervous about foresaking docs. recommendations on medication - you know how touchy the medics can be if you go up against them! And obviously I  don't want to alienate them either!

Although I have been using one cream or another for years (inc. Dovobet) I am not sure I am up to speed on the withdrawl effects or 'rebound' symptoms? I have always thought any worsening was just symptomatic of the usual waxing and waning we experience.

I would be grateful for any observations

hi colin.. sorry for my late response...

i would take whatever creams, you or your doc suggest....with some remission you will just use less until hopefully not need them...i can't see how they interfere with anything as they don't get to the  source of inflammation...and in the short run they might very well help...i would use everything available that in the past has proved to have merit and by reducing general inflammation they may be more effective.

if this helps ...and the sun, D, yogurt, peppermint and vits, reduce some of the sources of inflammation, rebound should be minimal or non existent.

hi jamie, although you never asked, i hope you don't mind if i jump in and disregard if i am out of line..but from my experimenting,  i don't think that will do it at those dosages and/or ingredients.......i would look to clearing any subtle infection,  reduce D to 1000-2000iu, more sun until pink,in your case, begin and/or increase ibuprofen but only once a day, a small multivit, folic when getting sun, b12 if over 50 and either more peppermint or better yet, adequate and preferably homemade  yogurt

Anita...bravo!  You look amazing!  Congrats to you.  It is so nice to see everyone here having a measure of success.  BJ is our hero!

Now Mr. Hero, I need your assistance.  My body has been doing well.  I do have some light spots on my back and rear end, but it's light and fading.  My scalp is touch and go.  It's not as good as it was, not as bad as before I started taking Peppermint oil.  The real problem right now are my nails.

Before I went on BF, some of my nails used to be really bad.  Then when I started BF, it improved almost to the point of perfection.  Now in the last 6 months, my nails have some issues.  The main issue is the top part of the nail (the end you cut off when the nail grows long) has whiteness underneath the nail.  Even after I cut the nails short, you can see some of the whiteness.  On the middle finger of my left hand, the whiteness has made it feel uncomfortable.  It's like there's a buildup of psoriasis between the nail and skin and it makes the corner tip of the finger sensitive to pressure.  The pressure is alleviated when I cut the nail and try to scrape out some of the psoriasis from underneath the nail.

The whiteness is very visible when my nails are a little longer.  When I cut them as I did yesterday, it's very visible on 3 nails.

Any suggestions BJ?  I don't know why, but it seems like since October/November, I have slipped a little in controlling the psoriasis.  Nothing by my doing as I have been consistent since May 2007, added Peppermint to my regimen, and have been better with my diet.  My diet since May 2007 has only improved since it's easier today than it was 3 years ago to avoid the bad stuff.
