Bad Nail Psoriasis
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:27:06 PM »
Hi, I am new to this site and have read many posts on psoriasis hoping to find a glimmer of hope for my nail psoriasis - to no avail.  I have had skin (skin psoriasis isn't too bad) and nail psoriasis for about 6/7 years brought on by stress at work - it began in my finger nails and I have completely lost all of these on two occasions but thankfully they grew back - a bit ugly but I was glad they grew back as having no finger nails was extremely painful.  The psoriasis also affected my two big toe nails and made buying and wearing footwear quite uncomfortable.  My nail psoriasis on both my fingers and toes also come with a green, smelly pus like substance which builds up under the nails (or what is left of them) It then comes to a head and releases the 'pus' (this happens regurarly).  I have been on various topical medication ie Dovenex etc but none of these helped. I was also on Methotrexate for about 18 months but this didnt have any affect either.  In June past I had both my big toe nails and nail bed removed hoping that this would help - they have been very slow in healing and I have had 3 different antibiotics due to infections in them. Thankfully they are healing better now however, I have noticed that I have still got the green 'pus' like substance coming from them.  I had swabs taken of this - at last!! but they have come back showing no infection. So it looks as if I had my toe nails removed for nothing! I was hoping that this might solve the problem but it hasn't, so I am no better off.  I agree with other posts that I have read that the medical profession have little interest in psoriasis and even less with nail psoriasis even though it affects the sufferer both physically and mentally. Has anyone else had this 'pus' like substance with their nail psoriasis? - I have not been able to find any articles etc in relation this.  Any information would be welcome.

Hi Catsaway,

I have nail psoriasis, had it for 15 yrs approx., but without the green pus.

I dont know what could be causing the puss.
Try and get a 2nd opinion or get to a podiatrist who may be able to identify and help.

Sorry I could not help more, someone may come along shortly and have other idesas or suggestions.
Sharon.

Thank you Sharon for your reply.  I haven't come accross anyone else with this problem either - hopefully someone has a similar problem to mine and will respond.  The thing is, the 'pus' comes out of my finger and toe nails - the gp is aware of it as is the doctor I saw at the skin clinic, but they don't seem interested - that is what is so frustrating!

hi cats :)

I've had nail p of varying degrees over the years.
I've never experienced the pus..but nails did look yellow/greenish- crumbling nail plate etc
but fortunate not to lose any! my nails since pic below have returned to near-normal.

Has your derm/podiatrist taken a scraping to exclude fungal infections?
i believe nail p sufferers are more susceptible to these.
were the swabs taken tested for fungi?
pie ;)

Hi Pieman, thanks for taking the time to reply. I am glad that your toenails have improved - poor you, they must have been very sore and uncomfortable.  My dermatologist only took scrapings at the beginning to confirm that it was psoriasis, but not since.  I might just mention to the gp and get a referral back to the derm as he could still take scrapings from my fingernails as they pus a bit too - thanks for the suggestion.  If you read any posts with 'pus' mentioned would you please let me know.  :)

i have to use a podiatrist every two weeks this is done on the NHS speak to your GP like i did to get you sorted has made a great difference with stubborn P and sorting nails as mine used to split and bleed

hope this might help too
also try and keep your feet well moisturised old socks and fill with double base put them on the second pair on top will help soften the skin and try to slow down the cracking

hope this helps
