Hello all - newbie needing help with p on scalp
« on: March 09, 2010, 10:06:28 AM »
Hi Everyone, nice to meet you all.   :)

I guess that i'm posting on here to get advice on treatments that may have worked for other people.

I've had p on my scalp for about 18 years.  Throughout that time my stable has been ketaconozole shampoo.  It doesn't help at all but it doesn't aggravate as much as 'normal shampoo'.  I get an itchy dry scalp with most of the red plaques around the hairline.

Other treatments I tried over the years include polytar shampoo, Betnovate scalp application and Elecon scalp application.

Currently I am prescribed Cocois (although I find this hard to apply)and clobetesol shampoo (which I am starting to find a bit harsh).  I have just attempted to use Dovonex for the second time but like my previous attempt it has made my scalp worse and given me a rash on the side of my face.

I guess what I was wondering is what treatments have worked for others.  I feel like I need something to put the moisture back into my scalp but easier to apply than cocois.

Also, I have heard conflicting informatiion in how to deal with the plaques and flakes.  I apply olive oil to my scalp for an hour at a time, or overnight and then rake off what i can using a fine tooth comb but I have also read that you shouldn't scratch the scalp as it can make matters worse.

I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.

Hi Siadwell - welcome to PHO.  :)

I don't have scalp psoriasis myself, but here are a couple of threads regarding scalp psoriasis that you may find helpful....

As you probably know, what helps one person may not necessarily help the next person, but good luck, I hope you find something that works for you. x

Shampoo-wise I use Dermax, which was recommended to me by a dermatologist friend

Your pharmacy can order it in without prescription, about £10 a bottle.

Works for my scalp, but obviously won't for everyone's.

Welcome along Siadwell, I've been using SLS free shampoo from Greenpeople for a while followed by a good dollop of coconut cream smeared on. This has mainly been helping with the flakes :)

Hi Siadwell
I'm a newbie too, isnt it great to find a whole bunch of people who understand and to share tips. I have problems with scalp that definately worse when stressed. I found using Vo5 hot oil treatment three times in a week sometimes helps  :D

I have heard SLS mentioned e few times on these threads and understand it is in Radox (that is guaranteed to set my skin going crazy, but i dont know what SLS is, can anyone explain for us newbies?

I was getting by with Lynx for ages after having a bad experience trying head and shoulders, but worth looking at the green people site as the products are free from irritants like these and parabons.

Hi Arizona and Jam

It is good to know that there are people to share experiences with.

I have already acted on the advice on here and got myself a bottle of Dermax.  I've used it once and was amazed by how my scalp and hair felt.  It shifted so many flakes and I can't wait to use it again tonight (sad eh?).  I'll let you know how I get on.

Hello and welcome. I use coal tar solution with salicylic acid cream. I put it in overnight and then wash it out using polytar shampoo. It stinks to high heaven, but I find it works for me. My scalp p gets scaly and thick very quickly, so some of the less smelly treatments don't really work as they can't penetrate the scles to get to the p underneath. Best of luck.
