I am a new psoriasis sufferer
« on: December 10, 2002, 01:40:00 PM »
Hello forum.

I have just discovered that I have psoriasis.  I have had it for about a year - on my scalp - I thought it was just bad dandruff until my mother said she had it as well and told me what it is.

I dont think I have it particularly badly so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of treatments I can take before I go to the doctor to see if it clears up.  Or should I go straight to the doctors and get a prescriptive treatment?

I have spent the better half of the day researching psoriasis on the internet and it seems that there are many treatments one can take - it would be great to get some suggestions as I have no idea which ones work and which ones dont.

Thank you in advance

Hi Debbie

A big welcome to the site to you!!

Boots sell a shampoo called Alphosyl which I use and that is pretty good - there is also T-Gel shampoo and Polytar - all these things are coal tar based.  Are you using anything like that - if not they might help.

Your GP can also prescribe things like Betnovate scalp application  - if your p is bad enough.

You can also do a search on this site to read about other posters tips for scalp p.

All the best

The treatment you use depends on the severity of your p. I've used a coal tar/salicilic acid cream (when v bad), Dovonex solution & betnovate solution.
I got all of mine from my GP so I can't suggest anything non-perscribed for you to use - sorry.
I'm sure you'll find plenty of info & help on this site.
Welcome to the madhouse  ;D

 :)

Welcome Debbie, I use Alphosyl shampoo which helps to stop the flakes from building up.
