MTX side affects
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:13:20 PM »
Hi i`m mandie and have suffered with psoriasis for 28 years, tried all creams and UV treatment like most of you guys. I have now decided to give MTX a try as it affects my life so much on a daily basis!
My main concern about this drug are the side affects especially the hair loss and problems with the liver!

so i was hoping to get some feedback wether it be positive or not!

many thanks mandie

hi, Mandie

for some peps  it works, with little unwanted side effects,   only you can up the fors and against

? has your derm mentioned mtx injections or wether you might be mtx resistant

i worked though a few retiniods then onto dmrd/mtx
mtx did not help my p/pa,  and not having a good rheumy or gp didint help either
now unable/unsuitable to have any dmrds or bio's

hope you find a treatment that helps you soon

hi David,

Thanks for your reply to my question, i found out about mtx through a girl i work with, her sister had the tablets and did have side affects, they then put her on the injection and it cleared immediately, but when i asked about the injection they said it was expensive and i should try the tablets first.

every time i have visited the derm unit i get someone different and they all seem to contradict one another, i`ve got nothing to lose giving it a go, but joining here has been a great help.

thanks again

mandie

Hi I was on mtx tablets and switched to injections to try to lessen side effect, I am now on biologics because I was putting on loads of weight and losing my hair, also I used to get sickness, but some people can take it without any side effects, it still cleared my skin up despite the side effects :)

I've been on MTX injections for 6 weeks now, my P is just starting to improve... I tried oral MTX about 3 years ago but didn't last long on them. I've had few side affects with injections so far.... But please remember tablets might be fine for you and till you try you wont know. You'll have regular blood test to monitor various levels.. including liver, I had slight hair loss with oral meds but nothing I couldn't handle...
Good luck S x

I've been on MTX for almost 3 months now. It hasnt cleared my P, but it is a lot less now.
I've had very little side effects apart from tiredness the day after taking MTX.
I also try to avoid fatty foods.

hi
I take MTX for pa.  i didn't realise I had it for my skin but since i started on mtx my skin has improved loads.  as for side effects, i can't say i've had any.  they keep asking me at the hospital about gastro related side effects, I'vehad none.  My friend also took it and she found that when she'd had an alcoholic drink she would vomit exactly 6 hours after.  They like to keep a check on your liver and told me to drink just 4 units a week.  I'm young tho, going out and going to parties so quite often go well over this.  My liver tests are always alright tho.

I've had no side effects but it has got rid of alot of symptoms and pain.  Everybody is different so I'd say go for it.   It could be a miracle drug for you.  don't give up to easily tho cos it takes a while to start to work, they told me 4 to 12 weeks.  And i'd say it took about 10.  Good luck with it

It has been great having the replies from all you guys as i was thinking of stopping it before it had a chance to take effect, thinking that i would be doing more harm than good to my health, as i never ever get poorly or sick!
I too like to go out and have a drink and was concerned about my liver, but as you say i do get liver checks reg so that will deter if things are ok.

I will let you know how i go in the next few weeks xx

Hiya
I've been on MTX since May 2010, was on the tablets to start off with then switched to the injections last September.

I think the thing you have to realise is that MTX will affect everyone differently. There are people in this group who take 25mg a week with no side effects at all, and then others who have to come off it at 10mg weekly because of the side effects.

The best thing you can do is to try it and give it chance to work. Remember that even if you do get any side effects there is a good chance that they will only be short term and will soon stop. Also folic acid...what dose are you on? Do you take it daily or weekly?

When I was on the tablets my skin cleared up almost completely. It was only when I swapped to the injections that it started to get bad again and that was only because they put the injections at a lower dose than I was on with the tablets. Hopefully now my injections have gone back up to 20mg my skin will clear up again :)

On the subject of alcohol, you will get many conflicting pieces of advice, only you can decide what is best for you. Personally I do drink alcohol. My consultant said that as long as my blood test are ok and I dont drink on mtx day or the day after then it is ok to drink, but only the recommended weekly allowance!

Good luck
