my history

well i first got the dreaded p when i was 9 years old, just on my scalp at first.  doctors said it was caused by the shock of my dad dying, my mum also has small patches on her elbows, so i suppose the hereditary factor must have played a part too.
that was it, until i was about 14, it started on my elbows and knees. not bad but enough to be embarassing to a teenager. my mum had been prescribed betnovate, so she told me to use a bit.  it worked for about 5 minutes, then, wham, i was covered. all over my arms and legs, and the scalp got worse. pretty much down hill from there really, tried a whole succession of cream, lotion and ointment in the last 20 years. nothing helped, only seemed to make matters worse, until in feb this year i had a massive flare up which covered my entire body, except my face.
it was then the doc. decided to send me to the derm clinic and refer me for uvb treatment.  luckily this worked, this is the clearest ive been in over 25 years. just small patches on my calf, knees and thigh. i can wear a skirt and shorts for the first time, and sleeveless tshirts too.
the course of uvb finished, and the dovobet has started.  p is still active, notice a new bit every day somewhere, but at least the dovobet is keeping it from getting too bad.  im off to spain next week, got my first swimming costume, so i intend to make the most of the sun and swimming.
it may take time, but there is something out there for everybody which will make a difference, its just having the patience to find it.

hiya tracey sorry to hear youve had the dreaded p since you were 9.P can be hereditary in my case it is my nan had it and also my mum when she was pregnant with me,and then when i was born i had it,so iv had p all my life,im now 29,i have tried everything, creams, lotions shampoos,iv also had the light therapy i had puva first then uvb, with puva i almost cleared but then it all came back within a month, and the uvb wasnt very succesfull.Im so glad uvb has worked for you and you can now wear skirts and shorts you must feel really good.At the moment my p is severe i have it all over my body, but iv started methotrexate, and iv been on it for 3 weeks now,iv seen a little improvement with my p but not alot, but it usually takes about 6 weeks.Iv had a few side effects, but i can cope with that,i just want to see my p clear i cant wait.Anyway will keep you posted.Anyway make sure you have a great holiday in spain you just wanna chill out 8).Anyway take care talk to you soon.

jules.

Hey Tracey,

The smallest amount is embarrassing to a teenager, believe me I am one!

No one in my family seems to have P (or any skin complaints for that matter), but I never knew my Dad so I'm figuring there was history of it in his family somewhere ???

My niece now suffers from eczema but that's from her Dads side, so yes I think skin complaints are hereditory.

Best of luck with your uvb, glad ur holiday was good.

Hi Tracey
Thanks for your tale.  Quite similar to mine - got it at 10/11 used a lot of steroids and then it has been with me ever since.

Enjoy Spain - say hello to the sun for me.
