new here
« on: May 02, 2004, 11:07:33 AM »
Found this forum trawling the net and read some of the posts which are interesting indeed.
I've had p for a year, it suddendly started while I was on holiday in Italy, and since then it got progressively worse - I have the kind which is on the soles of my feet and palms (heels) of hands, thickened skin which sometimes cracks (so painful).  I also get patches on my body which is easier to control.
It was not properly diagnosed for a long time, but I have been to a dermatologist and have been on all kinds of meds for about 8 months.  Currently on betnovate and dovonex.  My P is constant, but gets a bit better, gets a bit worse and sometimes gets very bad.
I am sick of the medication and being greasy and in pain walking, so I am looking to use some alternative (kinder?) options.  I think my doctor is going to put me on the light treatment next.
My diet is generally good but I also want to look into whether I'm doing anything 'bad' for my p. I am a smoker which I think is NOT good, does stopping smoking help? or is 'the damage done' so to speak?
I really am fed up with it and I find it a bit depressing at times.
It;s good to have found a place for information though. Thanks.

Hey biker, i am new as well!

I have had P all my life, and have never found doctors to be understanding or very helpful!  I would recommend looking intothe diet thing though, there is a thread here in the alternative bit about a book by Dr pagano!  I haev tried the diet, and it really helped me.  It has never cleared it completly, but feel that I can control it now!

All of us feel down  about it, depends ont he time of year,a dn if I am well generally!  I am dreading Summer as I can no longer hide it, so I have the choice of swealtering or being stared at - humm the chioce!!  Anyway you would think i would be used to it as I have it all over my face !

Check out the diet thing, it is def worth it!  Oh yeh, you do have to stop smoking...sorry!

;D
Keep smiling :)

I've had a chance to look around, great site for info. Thanks.
I have a couple of questions that I can't find discussed on the threads.

1) accupuncture - does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this as a treatment.  I live in London where I've seen specific advertisements in accupuncturists regarding p.

2) pressure points - it seems to me that I get p worse where there is pressure to my skin.  Feet are obvious, my hands are worse on the heels of my hands where I lean on my motorbike handbars.  I've also noticed I get outbreaks on my back specifically where I lean against my computer chair.  Also possibly from the waistband of trousers/underwear.

3) allergies/sensitivities - I'm also wondering if 2) has something to do with allergy/sensitivity (made more severe by the p?) of synthetic clothing.  My skin has never much liked nylon even before I got p.  Is there any evidence for physical contact allergies and p?

Thanks a lot.  Any comments appreciated.

Funnily enough, I had a wierd thought going through my head - my kids both suffered from baby eczema - and I eliminated it be not allowing them to wear hand knitted cardigans etc - thinking it might be the nylon/wool mix, if you know what I mean.  My thought was - would them suffering from baby eczema mean that later in life they would be more "prone" to having P.  I'd like to hear what other people think as well.

Hi Biker,

I'm a newby to this forum also. Had P for a long time. :-/
My P does seem to get worse during allergy season and
clear up some during summer.
As to accupuncture and
pressure points i'd tend to think that they wouldn't
hold much promise in the long run.

HI biker,

welcome to the board :)
I cannot help you with a lot, but I am very careful in regards to accupuncture.
I had it for my sore knee once (unfortunately made it worse and did not help at all :-/, but had very good effect on period pains ::) ... so would not say accupuncture is useless at all - but this bit won't help you I guess ;D) back to topic: After accupuncture I always get red spots where the needles have been that stay for at least a week.
I have read that accupuncture can trigger p at the needle sites (due to Koebners effect) that's why I try to stay away from it if I can :-/
