Hello,

I've watched this site on and off for a few years now, so figured it was time to introduce myself properly. I've had P for about 10 years on and off, I'm 46 now.

It all started with a bit of redness on a finger and then gradually progressed through the normal knees, elbows, legs etc. In the early days it was really more of an inconvenience than anything else and, starting off with GP care and then being referred to the local dermatology clinic, I progressed through the normal XXXvate's steroid creams, the coal tars, the Dovonex etc. Sometimes it would flare up quite badly but then just disappear again, with the exception of my hands which have gradually got worse over the years. Earlier this year I had a moderately bad flare up, went to see local Derm thinking he would prescribe some magic tablets, but ended up in hospital for 3 weeks - started there on Dermovate, then coal tar (up to 30% but got folliculitis so stopped) then Dovonex, then Dithrocream and then 7 weeks of UV treatment. At the end of the 7 weeks I was practically clear, with the exception of hands, and that lasted for a glorious 5 days. I stopped UV on the Friday and the P started back again the following Thursday, so I was a bit disappointed with the way that went. Anyway I'm currently waiting on another Derm appointment to see what he says this time. While I was in hospital they took bloods so that he could give me Acitretin if required next time so I think that is next on the list. I've been doing a bit of reading up and it sounds like a reasonable treatment to help with my hands hopefully. Anyway, that's me.

Jim.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the support, this is a great forum. Went to see Derm yesterday and they want to start me on MTX next week so a bit apprehensive about that. Got my bloods taken for the obligatory tests yesterday and back on Monday to the next appointment to start on the MTX. I've never taken any medication in my life before, so fingers crossed and I will post how it goes.

Jim.

Well, after 10 years of various creams, potions and ointments I finally started on MTX last night; first dose was 2.5mg so I'm not really expecting anything good or bad (hopefully) to come off that. I go up to 5mg next week and then 7.5mg the following two weeks before back to see the Derm again. I have to say that when it's first discussed with you and they give you the information leaflet about all the potential side effects it is absolutely terrifying - it took me a few days to decide if I wanted to proceed or not but finally decided I really needed to do something so here we are. It's Folic Acid on Thursday and then more MTX next Tuesday so I'll post again next week with any updates.

Well now had my 5mg of MTX for this week and fingers crossed, no side effects yet ( I know this is still only a taster amount so again as per last week I wasn't particularly expecting anything good or bad to happen). I know all the documentation says that it will take anything between 3-12 weeks to notice any difference, would anyone like to comment on how long before they noticed a positive effect? My legs are absolutely killing me at the moment, keep getting splits up the back of them which bleed and it's really painful to sit down or walk sometimes.
