New member...... HI.
« on: August 20, 2010, 02:05:54 AM »
My name is Arran and i suffer with P. I inherited P from my mother who inherited from her father etc. I have been told that my P didn't properly kick in (flare up) til I was 4 months old. Now I'm 19 and I feel as though my P is taking over me more than usual... Over the last few weeks it has been quite severe and imflamed. I smoke frequently and drink on weekends after my work shifts. I don't seem to be going through as much stress as I have before through-out my life but for some reason my skin is constantly dry even though I'm using prescribed Dovobet (body), Protopic (face + hands), E45 bath oil, T-Gel Shampoo and occassionally Hydromol or Eperderm when required. I am covered over 90-95% of my body scalp and face, which is frustrating for a guy my age... I have a love life not going into details but sometimes I don't feel up to the occassion. When I'm asked at work to serve people food and drink I feel as though they are looking at me and that can be extremely uncomfortable, which doesn't exactly help me due to lack of confidence. I guess I'm writing all this to find some sort of comfort... I find that sunlight and heat can help my skin, I've never travelled abroad and live in the UK, not much sunshine here lol. Also when I have an upset stomach my skin goes berserk on me, sometimes I'm up for hours a night scratching my body until I bleed... Not nice but i'm sure plenty of you have been through it... My diet has never been brilliant or stable, I don't really avoid certain foods or eat things daily that are good for me, I have been on diets as a child when my parents could provide what is needed but they never worked, sometimes they made me worse. I'm looking for cheap solutions to calm my P down, I love it on some days when I wake up smooth as anything and my skin is hardly red at all, but on most days I wake up in sheets of skin which requires alot of cleaning when I have guests... I have found that when my skin is really well I can use Lynx shower gels and apply cream on after which really keeps my skin smooth and settled throught the day and following night, normally resulting in another good day. I hate using greasy products such as Hydromol, Eperderm, E45 bath oil when my P is bad, it just makes a mess and makes my clothes cling on for dear life... I have tried Cyclosporin but it gave me migrains and cramps, I didn't really see an improvement in my P either after 3 months of use. In the winter and really cold days my skin can dry up on my legs and split through dryness, it doesn't matter how much cream I apply, it happens 3/4 winters, and this leads to applying cream on red raw limbs that sting to the slightest touch, sometimes resulting in spending time out of work etc. If i ever reduce my P significantly will this reduce the chances of passing it on later down the tree? I have lots of questions and not enough time to read through snippets of solutions... please help me!  Undecided

Hi Arran and welcome to PHO.

It sounds to me like it is time for you to go back to your derm and get another line of treatment.  Have you ever tried light treatment?   This for many is a god send.  The first few courses can give a pretty good remission time.  Or of course there are other oral treatment you can be offered.

Here is a good guide to the different things available You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login which is on the main site.

I used to love the days when I would wake up and suddenly my skin would look almost normal . . . . it was amazing how it could improve so much overnight.  For me that was only with guttate p though.

hi from me too arran :)
well done on first post fella, keep the questions coming!

topical management of 90-95% coverage seems unrealistic long term to me young fella.
Are you currently under a derm? like trish said..lot's of other options that would
be available for you to try out on nhs to give you remission and clear skin..just need
to find one that suits you.
good luck
pie ;)

Hello again, yes I was registered to a derm and I have had light treatment as a child and recently. As a child the PUVA light treatment barely affected my P, and I found the same happened when I recently tried new UVA/B treatments... This may sound foolish but I stopped attending my appointment as I felt there wasn't many options available for me. But now I am reconsidering and will get refered back to the derm. I want in on this humira treatment as it's helping my mum in big ways. i'm also glad to hear your P i settled through humira. Thanks Pie + Trish  :)

Hello and welcome along to the forum. The smoking and drinking won't be helping your p, and I say that as someone who does drink too much at the weekends ::) Some peeps find diet helps their skin and others don't. Personally, I think you should try and have a good healthy and balanced diet for your overall health, not just to improve your skin. There are a lot of people who belive p is linked to all sorts of different systems in the body. I would also recomend getting a pre paid prescription certificate, which means you can get as many scripts as you want for the period the cert is valid.
Best of luck.
