Acitretin and hairloss
« on: August 03, 2011, 05:38:56 PM »
Hi everyone, I,m new on this site, I've had ppp for about 20 months. Had been on acitretin for about 2 months, had to stop it about 4 weeks ago because it didn't suit me and severe hair loss. but still losing it by the handful. has anyone experienced the same? Am I likely to lose all my hair?  (Already had a look in the local wig shop) Any feedback would be great, thanks.

Hi Maria, welcome from me.
Sorry to read that one of the noted acitretin side effects has occured to you
as it did to me when i was on the same drug, similar to you lated 2 months and
stopped immediately because of no p clearance and hair rapidly falling out.
The hairloss did wane away over time...but was quite alarming at the time ???
others here have had the same sideeffect..then again some not. :)
pie ;)

Hello,

I stopped taking acitretin after three months, I lost hair every day after the first month and it only stopped falling out about six weeks after saying enough is enough. It was a very scary experience and in total I lost about a third and I imagine if I'd kept on taking it I'd now be wearing a wig.

Not a nice thing to go through. :(

Hope you get over it soon.

Hi Maria

Last year I was on this drug for 9 months.  It cleared my P but in the end couldn't cope with the hairloss.  After I stopped taking them it took about 4 months for my hair to come back, which it did.

I researched products for hairloss and took Nourkrin tablets, (get them from Boots Chemist).  They are expensive but they did work for me.

Good luck

Chris

Hi ALL,
I also lost hair and not just on my head ;), but it was a small price to pay to get rid of the p.p.p, i am now clear :) but hair is still thin i have been on the acitretin now for two years and no end in sight as it comes back as soon as i miss a few days (if i run out) witch is a pain as i have to go a long way for the perscription but overall i am very happy with this drug

I stopped taking acitretin last week, had been on them 14 weeks, had my dose upped after weeks 8 & 12. Had already been toiling with other side effects but my hair started coming out shortly after going on to highest dose. For the very slight difference Acitretin made to my psoriasis the side effects are not worth it for me. Shall see what my derm says next week although I would not wish to resume these tablets.

Hi everyone,
Thankyou for your replies it seems a mixed bag of results from taking acitretin.
I suppose I'll have to wait and see, time will tell as they say!!. Thanks for the tip will certainly take a tip to boots.
I never thought that when I got a little patch of ppp on the palm of my hand it would end up on both hands and feet, cause so much pain and be so hard to get rid of.
Love to you all, fingers crossed for a miracle cure  :)

I have very thick hair and fortunately after discontinuing with this drug my hair loss stopped and 2 years or so on, my hair is as thick as ever. I had all the negative effects and none of the positive. It was another step I had to take on the road to eventually having Humira prescribed. ::)
