are there alternatives to methotrate ?
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:23:14 PM »
Hi Newbie here and its good to be here :)

I have had severe Psoriatic arthritis for over 10 years now, the last time I seen the rheumy I told her that I was finished taking anymore bios, I was on Enbrel and mtx weekly but the rheumy said she was not pleased with my progress and took me off the Enbrel to put me on to Humira even although I was happy enough with Enbrel (getting by with on it), to cut a long story short I went on to Humira and I started getting all sorts of side effects including a new psoriasis (pustular psoriasis on my palms) and drastic hair loss (80% volume) I always had a great head of hair even at 52.

My GP sent me to see a dermatologist because of my new psoriasis who said "Ask your rheumy if you can come off the Humira for a while to I see how things are with you off this, when asked about the hair loss and if the drugs are/could be a contributing factor his reply was "definitely you dont get to 52 and start lossing your hair for no reason"  People do not realise how "TOXIC" the medication is that they are putting into their bodies"  (mtx & bios)
This got me thinking and I looked up the Humira website and was shocked to discover:
"Humira can make your psoriasis worse and/or cause other forms of psoriasis" it can also cause hair loss  >:(
When confronted about this she did not know what to say but still wanted me to continue taking the Humira! I then decide enough is enough, no more bios no more guinea pig for me!
Closing the door after the horse has bolted springs to mind >:(

Anyway fellow sufferers I would like to know if there is any alternatives to methotrexate which is non toxic (non poisonous) and if so, which ?

if u want more non conventional ideas then

gotu kola (a herb available at holland barrett) pretty much stops the pain in three days for me.
some people it increases cholesterol but i have to say that didnt worry comapred to the pain.

intracal a calcium/magnesium supplement that is 95% absorbable (usual cheap clacium/magnesium supplements are only 9%) has helped me greatly in just three weeks. available from a company called oxyhealth.
