Dovonex (Daivonex) Scalp Lotion
« on: September 26, 2002, 08:40:14 AM »
I have been using Dovonex scalp lotion for about 2/3 weeks now.  My scalp seems to be getting worse and worse.  Sorry for beng so disgusting but I can now pick huge scales (compared to before) off my head.  I think I once read that it becomes more scaly before it gets better but the thing is it is so bad that I cant keep my fingers out of my scalp so I dont see how it will ever get any better .................  has anyone else had this reaction ?  And in fact I now have patches where I didn't have any before  ???

In fact I want to get some more Betamousse because it was the only thing that I ever worked.  Thankfully although I live outside the UK we are returning in a month and I can't wait to get my hands on some of the stuff ... (how sad is that?) ::)

lindsay,

Too bad it's getting worse.... :-/

I have only just signed up to the board, so I haven't had time to read everything yet, but here's what helps for my scalp:

I don't have experience with Daivonex Scalp Lotion (but I do with the Daivonex cream)

I use two different shampoo's which work great for me
1- Selsun
2- FreeDerm Zinc

If I have an outbreak (after not having used either of both for some time), the first couple of days I experience the same as you do.
I don't know why, but I think it "loosens" the scales, therefore "huge" scales appear as opposed to lillte flakes.
But generally after using the shampoo's for 2 weeks, that stage has passed and I'm on my way to a p free scalp.... ;)

But as with everything p, everybody reacts differently, so I can only say I hope it works for you :D

Good Luck & let us know....

Hiya

I was prescribed the Dovonex scalp lotion by my GP and I had to stop using it. The P got worse, so I was losing quite a bit of hair.

I now use Body Shop hemp scalp oil and the one in their aromatherapy range (dunno what it's called!!!)

It didn't strip my hair as much and it's almost stopped falling out now. Also, when I scratch my head, I don't end up with a small blizzard on my sophisticated black top (lovely look for the office!! ::) )

Best of luck finding something that's good for you m8/ Oh, and drs always say it'll get worse b4 it gets better, often to cover their own backs when their miracle cure is rubbish! Sometimes it's true but I've found that, with P, iit invariably just gets better.

There have been a number of scalp discussions recently (Des always knows how to post the references - clever her!!!  :D :D) You may find them worth reading.

I sympathise with you .. my scalp's been really bad in the past - particularly in the early stages of P when I was a teenager. It's not like that now - I've learned to manage it, I suppose.

My comment here is that I have found Dovonex (and Betnovate) scalp application ineffective at best and irritating at worse - my derm says they're alcohol based solutions - They just dried my scalp up and made my skin itchy and flaky. Like Guy I use Cocois to keep my scalp deflaked and non-dry. And, since its really bad, you could do what my clinic says which is to use a shower cap or something to cover your treated scalp/hair up as you wander around at home (if you keep it on overnight then just put old towels over the pillows). The heat will add to the effectiveness of the treatment. I then use Polytar AF shampoo in the morning and then Doublebase (moisturiser) at night when I can't be bothered to do anything else but I want to stop my scalp and hair getting all dry.

I would suggest you go back to your GP and get his/her advice (but add in what you would like to try having thought about what we are all saying). Get new stuff prescribed and see if that helps.

Good luck and let us know how it goes

I have same problem Have been using something called Diprosalic It is a lotion quite watery and it does sting a bit where you have been sratching BUT it is clearing the P. I believe it is quite an old treatment My gp is great and tries anything he can find. All dovenex treatmnets seem to make me worse but my mum has p and it helps her so we are all different

I stick to herbal things. I find that a good quality Tea-Tree shampoo works well for me. If I have been scratching and de-flaking then wash my hair , my scalp stings a tiny bit for a wee while, but the result is soothig and a big reduction in flakes.  It also keeps my hair in good condition.
