Dovonex advice
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:58:49 PM »
Hi

Just got dovonex about 4 days ago, and been applying it once each night.
Finding that the legions are definitely a little flatter and more pinky and less itchy (which is excellent), and they don't seem to be flaking. but the normal skin surrounding the legions now seems to be peeling and also when i apply double base moisturiser there is a burning sensation.
Is this all normal?

also the doctor said apply sparingly - but made it seem as if this was only to make it last longer instead of any specifically medical reasons. again, what are you're experiences?

Does anyone else have any other do's/don'ts with this stuff that i should know about?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I do moisturise but not usually just before i apply the dovonex, and i was not told about fingertip units so thanks for that link.

Although is that not specifically for steroid creams? and as dovonex is not a topical steroid do the same rules apply?

Same goes for weaning myself off, i was always under the impression that i had to do that for steroids but not so much for dovonex.  Seen a nice improvement in under a weeks worth of use, and it is an thousand times less painful and itchy.

Any other advice from people would also be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Dovonex is not a steroid (unlike Dovobet), no weaning off is necessary. I just use it over winter, it doesn't clear the p completely but it keeps it from getting too bad and the best bit is it stops all flaking, which for me is worth it alone. I don't bother taking any particular care with it, it doesn't affect any surrounding skin for me at all.
Probably nothing to do with it but I couldn't get on with doublebase, I use E45 but then some people don't get on with that either...

Okay great! thanks. It definitely stops the flaking and has reduced redness greatly for me. Although i think i smudged some on my face and have already seen a small red mark which on my which I'm worried may be p. Do you use it on/around you're face at all?

And do you get any kind of 'rebound' flare when you stop using it?
and, finally (haha) are you aware of any long term use effects?

Can't seem to find many detailed accounts of peoples experiences online.

Hi Yorkie,

Dovonex should not be applied to the face. See this link, originally provided by David:

As Daryl says, keep it well away from the face area. For this, like shaving area and hairline I use Exorex, a tar lotion available off the shelf. Again, no miracles but seems to do ok for me.
No rebound at all, I just stop using it when I go on a sunny holiday so have never noticed any rebound but it's not steroidal so shouldn't be a problem. Only long term effect I've heard of is above normal calcium levels but only really if you use it a lot for a long time. I stay off it all summer. Irritation can be a problem so keep an eye on that.
This is the first winter really where I've applied it twice daily religously for 4 months solid and I'd say my p now is around 20% of where it would be without it. I'm still wearing shorts to the gym!

hi guys, im new to this site but this chat interested me, ive had this for about 6 years and spent the first 7 months on the sick, my hands were cracking and bleeding as were feet, back/legs/arms were completely covered, all in all a real mess, the doctor put me on methatrexate (sorry for spelling mistakes), dovobet and moisturisers but after 7 monts of drinking nothing but water eating very little else than fish it had only got better enough to enable me to resume moderate work, i stopped taking the methatrexate when i discovered possible side effects, after going down various routes herbal done it for me :), but saddly it has returned this winter with a vengance after resbite of about 2 years and the doctor has prescribed dovonex but i am experianceing a burning sensation about 1/2 hour after applying.....am i applying wrongly or is this usual ????

Thanks for the reply again poncho.

I have also noticed that the spots are slightly larger now (but still a lot less red and scaly, they feel very flat now)
I have guttate and had a few spots that were tiny, almost pin prick size which never changed but with dovonex they've expanded to about 4mm diameter. Did you notice a similar thing at all? and if so did they stay like that after you stop using it?

also @ranleyb sorry to hear its back, i only get a slight burning sensation when i apply double base moisturiser. But from the few articles i have read they said its quite a common side effect (1 in 10) to experience a burning sensation afterwards so I'm sure you're not applying wrong

Hi Yorkie,

It is not normally prescribed for P but Eumovate can be effective for guttate and it can be used on the face. But talk to you Derm first.

And look at this link:

It has worked for me in the past. But, as we know, it may not work for you.

I hope that this helps.
