Dovonex Alternative?
« on: December 12, 2011, 06:45:10 PM »
Hi all

I dont know whether this has been covered in the past but I use dovonex cream everyday and it works wonders.
However, I have been to the pharmacy today to pick up my monthly supply and have been told its been discontinued! Can anybody reccomend an alternative? I have used Silkis in the past which I've not found as good and would much rather a cream than an ointment as it can be so messy. I am really panicking as I rely on dovonex completley at the moment!

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Hi
There was Dovonex ointment and Dovonex cream if i remember right. One has been discontinued, the one you have prescription for. You need to go back to doc and ask for prescription for the other one as the chemist can only dispense exactly what on on the script

I'm exactly the same as you, Dovonex cream was the only thing that ever worked for me and the ointment was terrible in comparison. I'd recommend looking around other pharmacies, because it wasn't discontinued for health reasons many still have some in stock - this is how I've managed to get hold of some more.
As for an alternative, I've yet to find one, I'd suggest asking your doctor for something similar.
Good luck.

Hi Sarey B it was the same case for me when I went back to the pharmacist, you just have to see your doctor and tell him to prescribe it to you again.

I'm the opposite, I've used the ointment for years, it"s the best thing I've ever used, but I found the thinner cream useless. Ointments are generally thicker, more concentrated and more effective than creams. Don"t worry about the greasiness - I wear old t-shirts in bed and in the morning I just lie around on the bed in an old wool dressing gown for about 5 or 10 minutes before getting dressed (get up a bit earlier!) and it's fine. Buy those fuzzy Egyptian cotton type sheets for the bed, they won't stain.

I wonder where "Dovonex "problem" was sorted".
Went to 2 Boots stores today, in Hounslow and in Richmond. Hounslow pharamcist said that they did not have it in stock and advised to go to another pharmacy. Pharmacist in Richmond said that Dovonex was discontinued and told be to go back tp GP and get a prescription for replacement.

Its sorted up here in Rotherham......The doctor was telling me to ring round chemist to find some but as it happens our local chemist had it back in stock.

I used to be on Dovonex, and it had some success, but my GP at the time suggest I went onto Curatoderm, as it is apparantly similar in composition, but safe to use on the face. That also worked for me as Dovonex had. You might want to consider asking for Curatoderm instead.
