Food intolerances?
« on: September 23, 2002, 03:37:18 PM »
I believe that psoriasis is largely caused by food intolerances although other factors such as lifestyle, stress and hereditary factors play a part.

I was wondering whether people on this forum think that psoriasis is caused by intolerances to specific foods, such as tomatoes, which are common to all psoriatics or whether each sufferer has his/her own unique combination of food intolerances which cause psoriasis? Are there foods that the psoriatic ‘community’ generally agrees are bad for psoriasis?   ???

Hi Sungirl,

A lot of people find certain foods tend to trigger their p - alcohol seems to be quite a common one(especially hop based drinks), tomatoes and apples for some people.
These are not scientific theories though. I've mentioned it to my doctor before and she's turned her nose up.
They're not going to condem healthy eating- after all eating lots of fruit and veg isn't going to do anyone any harm!
I think it seems to be a trial and error thing and a lot of people are sceptical about it and believe that it's an illness linked with the immune system not the digestion.

I think the secret is to try everything before you condem it and keep going until you find something that helps you. We all seem to be different - the only underlying things tend to be stress and the strep throat infections!

Not much help really! Sorry for rambling on!

Em.

[ Hi Girl
Yes your on the right track , Tere's no CURE for Psoriasis and I don't think there ever will be , All skin complants are mainly caused by what goes in the mouth as food or drink, If the Liver or Kidneys can't handle it they throw it out through the skin, The problem is it's a differant food or drink for every person,  Dairy foods come top of the list  then there's red meats , oranges and every thing you can think of,  But youve know your own diet so you can start to check it out , You must increase your dayly fluid intake to 2ltrs min, Cut down on junk foods & check all tin foods for  EEEEEEEs adatives, Increase you fruit & veg in take as much as you can , Just to put a smile on your face, None of the Psoriasis sufferers we know have any trouble with BOOZE  8) ::)
Hope this helps a bit , Take care >CY<

Well ,
I'm not sure about this. Have to say in my case no diets, cleansing teas never helped. the theories about liver or kidneys demage  ::)- I don't think so.
It's nice theory but I think not the right one.
Honestly sometimes it makes me even  a little upset because that gives people  some illusions that through the skin all the bad stuff is going out. I don't believe in this.Although I used to for a while.Long time ago.
I tried diets as well as many many others on this site did. No effect.
Is there somebody who cleaned his (her) skin 100% based on diets and it was permanent ?
I didn't find any difference or change in my P which would be linked to any food .
But eat healthy is not a bad thing at all.

I have to agree with CY and Em on this one - whatever I eat or drink very much reflects in my skin....

I'm not totally sure about the things common to all sufferers, I'm thinking more along the line that everyone has to find out for him/herself what triggers the P :-/

As Em says, there are a couple of things that are regarded as being generally bad: all nightshade veggies (potatoes (true for me), tomatoes, eggplant (not true for me ??? ) ), sugars, processed foods, and alcohol.
I find alcohol as such is not so much a problem, as beer all on its own.... makes me flare up big time :-/

orange juice! If I drink too much, my P really flares up! I don't know why and if I could ask my skin, I would. I love oranges too, sob :'(

Anyway, then there's my usuals like milk, my skin dislikes milk, but so do I so that's ok.

Strawberries too, for some reason unbeknown to me.

Swiss rolls (this ones really wierd) bring me out in a big lumpy rash that itches like prickly heat but looks like stinging nettle sores!

Hey but I'm wierd ;) I used to get rashes that the GP had never even seen before and couldn't find in any of his books. Do you thin they'd pay me if I donated my body to science???

I don't find my diet affects my p in any significant way.

I think there may be something in the theory for some people but I don't think there is in mine.

I think its probably more to do with a combination of things liek stress, happiness, etc rather than just diet alone.
