I never knew about this until the pharmacist started to recognise me from my constant trips in for prescriptions.  She asked me how much I spend on prescriptions a quarter, which is a small fortune, and then told me about the PPC.  I now take full advantage and stock up on all my creams, lotions, shampoos and meds whenever I go.

I think it's outrageous that doctors fail to inform you of these cards when they know just how often you are spending money on prescriptions.  I'm sure many of you are like me and not only get prescribed one thing at a time so this can be rather costly.  Last time I was there, when I got told about the PPC, I had 7 different creams, lotions and meds to pick up.  The pharmacist has saved me a fortune these past few months.

Yes I use the 3month one and stock up as much as I can, but do check with the Pharmacist about the cost of 500g tubs of moisturisers, depending on what you use some are cheaper over the counter. Especially Emulsifying Ointment and Aqueous cream. And I very much doubt if we will go back to free px as the NHS is struggling now. Some people can apply for free px's and over 60's are free too.

It really is in your best interests to buy one. You can not only get your topicals but also moisturisers, bath therapies and shampoos. On top of this, anything else you might need for non-P can be got with it.

This card may well save you a fortune. I pay for mine of DD over the whole year and don't even notice it going out of my account...and everything I need is covered.

It amazes me that most people know nothing about this card...so this is now a ticky topic and please pass the url on in threads and posts where people mention 'the costs of prescriptions'.

do you pay monthly direct debits? if so, how much a month is it?

I just did the three month one as was only twenty eight pounds something, i looked at the yearly direct debit, was ten something per month.
Glad i did it though, prob just renew with the debit card when need to, was very simple to do

I've got a 3 month PPC and managed to get 8 precriptions in that time so far finishes in Feb so doubt if I'll have anything else on scrip.  What is annoying is that I only see my derm every 4 months and he normally only gives me 3 items so not worth paying out for a PPC unless my doctor also gives me anything.  Went for the 3 month one just before Xmas because I had 2 scrips off my doc and was seeing my derm not long after, little knowing he was going to give me a shopping list so it was well worth paying out for the 3 month PPC  :)

What I did was when I got my scrip from chemist asked for a FP57 receipt before I got the PPC then when it looked like it was worth paying out for the 3 month (at least 4 scrips) one I ordered it.  You can back date it upto 1 month so keep a check on the date on the FP57, a normal chemist receipt won't do.

Justalife a word of warning if at a later date you get caught you could find it expensive: Penalty Charges.  If you should of paid for your prescription items, you will face penalty charges and may be prosecuted under the powers introduced by the health act 1999.  Routine checks are carried out on exemption claims including some where proof may have been shown.
