Methotrexate Vs Ciclosporin
« on: August 12, 2009, 09:23:08 AM »
Ok, I need some help here  :D

Got referred back to the hospital yesterday as my P has gotten bad again.

She has now said my P is classed as severe and I have two choices:  Methotrexate or Ciclosporin and I have the choice  :o

I have read the paperwork she gave me and I just don't know which way to go - they both have their pro's and con's.

Any advice anyone?

Thanks

Oh dear, another case of choose your poison  ;D
I haven't had Cyclo so can't tell you anything about that, there are people who have tried both and will be along soon to tell you I'm sure, unfortunately it's a very personal thing, we all have different experiences with different meds.
All I know is when I started MTX the derm chose that rather than Cyclo because she said MTX gave quicker results.
Good luck whatever you decide.
Ellie.

Hiya hun..ive been on both mtx and have just come off of ciclo....in my opinion sadly they are both as bad as each other regarding side effects..BUT BEAR IN MIND U MAY NOT SUFFER side effects....The Mtx i found took a lot longer to have any effect on my skin....and it made me have trouble breathing...not meant to concern u cos as soon as i came off it, everything went back to normal...i was extremely tired on the mtx and had feelings of nausea...my P was also severe with approx 70-80% coverage (If u have  look on the main pho page...not the forum, u will find pics of my p..hands, legs, toenails and breasts) This was before the mtx and sadly it didnt really make much change.....

Ciclo however, has been amazing on my skin...please check out my thread in the recreation section of the forum as it starts from the very first day i started the ciclo and ive added updates throughout my months treatment...again however the side effects got me and derm has taken me off it.....also check out the pics as the difference was amazing and the P on my hands had completely gone within 5 days!!

hope this helps

Hi.
I have been on both in the last couple of months.  Both had there advantages and disadvantages. The cyclo I slept about 16 + hours a day on but it worked immediately and got the best results. However I developed an allergic reaction to it so I had to be taken off them. The MTX I have just finished after 2 doses as it made me too sick to continue, couldn't eat, although did have loads of energy.
However as someone else said, not everyone gets bad side effects. Everyone reacts differently, there is no telling what will work and what wont I am afraid...you are just as well tossing a coin. ::)
The disadvantage (in my opinion) with the MTX was not being able to drink, which is fine in a normal week but personally I would have found hard in the long term socially, but this may not be a problem for you.
Good luck in what ever one you try, and keep us updated.

I have been on both and by far the superior for me is ciclo. I have had few side effects with ciclo...and clearance is good so far..(fingers crossed). MTX was hideous...felt tired all the time and sick..and did b*gger all for my P...

As we keep saying, everyone is different..As Nicknackwack says...`choose your poison`!! ;D

:) :) Yup "Choose your poison" is my mantra !

MTX did'nt even touch the sides for me but Cyclo worked really well. But as Jules says we are all different, so do your research very well and get to know what you are up against then choose your poison ! Good luck  ;)

I've tried MTX and like many left me very tired. Not only where there physical Effects there were psychological effects for me. My confidence dropped away and I became very fretfull and forgetfull. Not a nice drug.

Looking at Ciclo next year to see if that helps me get a clear that I am able to maintain longer then a few weeks.

Good luck on what ever you chose.

Thank you for all your advice.  I think I know which way I am swaying towards at the moment - I have until the 25th to decide!

Does anyone know whether the tablets (either one) has any affect on P of the nails?  Mine are quite bad and wonder if the tablets will help?

Thanks again
