I had an outbreak of an itchy rash a bit back, that I think was a reaction to coal-tar. I used an anti-histamine, and both the rash and the itch disappeared.

Someone's also suggested oilatum as an itch-killer - it's more for eczema / dermatitis than P, but it's an emollient as well, so I'm going to give it a bash.. Anyone else tried it?

Hi Elessar ;)

I have a tube of Oilatum in my cupboard at work ;D

I find it actually does relieve the itching, albeit it only for a short while (an hour or so - but when you're really itchy, that's great! ;D).
It also smells lovely :D

It is quite greasy though, so when my P is very angry (like right now :-/ ), I have to stay away from Oilatum, as I risk my spots getting pustular :-[

Otherwise, it feels really cooling when you put it on, and it does calm down the itch :)

Good luck
;)

Hi all,

Thanks for the ideas. I have stopped using Eurax. I thought that it made a slight difference, but a few days later I am itching as much as ever. No, I haven't used anything with Urea in, so that isn't the cause. I was trying Alphosyl, which seemed to be helping fractionally, but have stopped it for the moment. I want to tell the Derm that I am just using emollients and antihistamines, so he can take it from there.

I will get another jar of Nivea. At the moment I am working my way through a small container of Tee Tree Oil Cream which feels rather similar and is soothing. I am also using up a tube of Anthisan which seems to be the most effective.

I will keep the oilatum in mind. Might suggest it to the Derm on Wednesday. I will ask for some 25 mg Phenergan tablets, also. I sympathise with Des waking up at night to find he has scratched himself in his sleep. I found that a valium 2mg tablet gave me a quiet night recently, and also tried one of my husband's antihistamine hayfever tablets.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one amassing lots of bits and pieces!

Sorry about your major flare-up, Natty. Hope it gets 'better' soon. I have had this for only 9 months and that is bad enough.

Cheers

Sheila

other things i have used when the itching is bad have been Aloe Vera Gel - nice and cool, and banana boat after sun lotion which is also a very good moisturiser
