UVB. Where do i stand?
« on: January 29, 2012, 04:03:40 PM »
Im wondering if anyone could give me a bit advice. Had P all my life. UVB treatment is the only thing that clears it. Unfortunately they are always reluctant to give me it cos iv had a lot of treatment. My argument with them is that they say that a 6 week course gives you the same exposure as a week in the sun. They then go on to tell you that you should only have a set amount of treatments in a life time, then with the next breath they tell you to get out in the sun as much as you can.
Anyway iv got the hospital tomorrow to see about it. Do i have any right to decide if and when i recieve the treatment?

Hi Bob,

I have no idea whether you have the right to insist on UVB, but I imagine that your Derm does not want to give you skin cancer. And I suppose that a lot depends on you skin type. See this link for further information:

You may be able to use that in the discussion with your Derm.

As far as I know once you've had your total life uv then that's it.
I'm currently half way thru and I'm hoping to get some as I have a few patches appearing and growing

hi, BOb

Ive had all my nhs joules  , said i would sign disclaimers  for more light treatments
but my derm would not allow/give any more
i think the criteria as changed nowadays and 200 joules is all thats allowed

in my early yrs had a derm who used to sign me of work  all summer so i could sunbath
and have grenz/uva    where only available  in them days

! some derms dont even prescribe light treatment

rule of thumb is you have to have 30% coverage before they prescribe or p is having a severe psychological effect on your mentall health

? have you been prescribed puva or drmrds /bio's been mentioned

? has your GP supported you ,written to the derms  phoned round and asked if there are any derms sympathetic to your case  willing to prescribe,  also worth asking your mp if willing to help

take some 1 with you if poss to back you up   be polite but assertive
hope all goes well today

Thanks for the replys. Well i went to the hospital this morning and its all changed. Since my last visit in 2010 new research has suggested that the dangers of UVB treatment are not as bad as they thought so they have almost doubled the amount of exposure your allowed in a life time. The appointment was with a nurse in what they call a nurse led clinic. She was able to take a look at me and asses if she thought UVB was the to go. She the went to fetch the Derm who confirmed it and got me to sign the disclamer. Iv now to go back and get a MED test tomorrow, this is also new to me. With the UVB to start the following day. This is after me GP was refusing to refer me to the hospital in the first place.
Sorry if this is old info to you guys but as i said it was all new to me.
