What to do? More Light vs Fumaderm
« on: August 12, 2011, 11:59:26 AM »
New to this so bear with me please.

I am completely covered in P except from hands, feet and face. I did a round of light treatment last autumn and it completely cleared with the exception of few stubborn areas. It started to come back after about 6 weeks and am now back to square 1. My derm says I can do the light treatment again or be put on Fumaderm. The side effects sound awful for some people and seem nearly as bad as the p in the first place.

So really would like to know - is the Fumaderm worth it?

Has anyone has 2nd round of light treatment and it has worked for longer?

Thanks

A combination of both!  Get put on Fumaderm it takes months to start working and in the interim ask for a regime of UVB sessions to help put your psoriasis into remission.  Fumaderm has some pretty grim side effects such as sickness, upset stomach, stomach cramps, hot flushes and fatigue but all in all its the only thing that has worked for me!

I have had 3 lots of light therapy.  I never managed 100% clearance on it and I was covered from head to foot again within 3 months max!

Good luck!

Fumaderm for sure
it cleared me and a lot of others using it.
nearly 3 years on im still 98 of so % clear
im using sunbed a couple of times a week and it looks like its
helping to shift the stubborn patches that are left
so you could always ask for some UV to help kick start it as it took
me nearly 6 months to get clear
good luck

I took Fumaderm and the white cell count went down but the p had started to clear.
Then the cell count went up and the p came back so we had another go. It worked 'just' as the white cell count started to get perilously low again - The p had all but cleared surprising my Dermatologist as I'd extensively thought I'd be 'clever' and do some looking around myself for some sort of relief. In fact my previous D suggested I come into hospital for a week which I refused convinced there had to be some sort of relief.

Sadly 18 months later and the p is coming back again so off we go down the Fumaderm route - Funny enough I must be very lucky because from memory it did not take that long to work effectively previously.

Years ago I had Acetretin which failed and never went down the MX route because I like the occasional drink. I had PUVA treatment which ahem, failed when I was overexposed and let me assure anyone that literally 24/7 itching was not pleasant which lasted for around a week. I've also used various Coal Tar products and Dovobet (and Dovonex when it used to be available) which did nothing to relieve the conditions.  :(

What I would say is the personally I've always been so impressed by the hospital Consultant's and nurses who have all been so helpful and considerate to me over the last 25 years.  :)

I have had NBUVB twice. The first course of treatment was very successful and gave me almost complete remission for 6 to 9 months. The second course was a disaster, and I was covered again within weeks of completing the treatment. So, at the beginning of December 2010 I started on the Fumaderm route. By February 2011 I was up to the max dose of 6 x 120mg tabs (the blue ones) a day and my P had all but gone, and I was more or less over the side effects (all I have now is a continually dripping nose, and I sleep a lot).

Since about May I have had to juggle the Fumaderm dose due to low lymphocyte counts. At present I am on 3 blues one day and 2 blues the next. My P has come back a bit but not nearly to the extent that it was.

From my point of view, Fumaderm has been the best treatment that I have ever received and I would recommend anyone to try it. I hope that this helps.

Hi

I'm on 120mg Fumaderm (4 x white tablets) a day and am increasing the dose as usual instructions. next week will go up again.

I'm also simultaneously having TL-01 Narrow band UVB once a week at hospital (skin 90% clear just maintenance dose so I'm not going up in Kj units)

I'm hoping that in a few months the Fumaderm will kick in and I will stop the light.

This was the Derm consultant's decision so nothing wrong with mixing the two (unlike Cyclo and MTX)

good luck!
