A little personal
« on: February 14, 2008, 03:20:44 PM »
I have had psoriasis twise in my life, when it starts it is bad.

All over a form called Guttate.

But my problem is that I have not had it for a while. I am a self-harmer. And it has started to come back where I have harmed.

I am too scared to go to the docs because in a way its my fault that its back.

Not sure what to do?

 :)  Hi Nicky

Please go to the doctor.  If he is any good, he will help you with both and should not embrass you.

I know how you feel, as my neice was a self harmer.
She got help from the nurse at the surgery.

Hope you do go and all the very best.  :) :) :-*

Hi Nicky

It's called Kobner's syndrome.  It's where psoriasis is more likely to form on old scar or healed tissue.  It happened to me, fell over got a big scab then got a big patch of psoriasis after it healed up.  Having said that it's not your fault.  Please don't let that stop you from going to your Doctors.

I wish you well.

Cheers
Adam

Thanks for the replies.

The only thing is the last two times I had this I had to have light treatment, can not remember the actual name.

It is more about the fact it itches and is uncomfortable than the way it looks. I do hate how it looks but I do not show my arms because of the self harm anyway.

Just worried that they may say if you didnt cut then you would not have got the psoriasis. Just a little confused about what to do because it is so itchy it bleeds because of it.

Hi Nicky

No Dr would or should say that even it were true and it isn't.  I'm guessing you may have some issues with doctors regarding self harming.  But don't let that stop you from going.  What is your GP like?

Cheers
Adam

Hi Nicky
First let me say I think you are being courageous telling us about your self harming.
Unfortunately P does set in where we have cuts or wounds the Knoebler effect it's called.
If you can discuss self harming with your doctor it would be a positive thing and don't be afraid to do so, your doctor's there to help you deal with problems.
It's not your fault P seems to jump on damaged areas of skin and what ever it is that is driving you to self harm would be the area to concentrate on understanding and dealing with if you can.
It would be unprofessional to accuse you of causing the P by cutting yourself and it would be untrue.

I would think some anti inflametry ie betnovate will bring the inflamation down and reduce the itching in the short term ( it's what sterooid creams are good at ) but the GP should advise on longer term treatment like light treatment.

I hope all goes well.

Tim  :)

Hi Nicky,

Don't be scared - if your p is causing you a problem then you really should go to the GP. I can understand why you are worried. If the doctor does say anything, remember that it is not your fault that your psoriasis has appeared where your cuts were or anywhere else on your body. After all, people get psoriasis where they have tattoos, or where clothes rub and irritate skin folds. There are elements of everyone's lifestyle that could potential irritate or cause psoriasis patches (ie. stress, getting to tired, alcohol). That doesn't mean that it's our fault we have p, so don't ever let anyone make you think it's your fault that your p is active just because it happens to affect where your cuts are. It is also not your fault that you feel the need to self-harm in order to deal with your feelings. If any GP tries to make you feel bad about your problems don't hesitate to make an appointment to see someone different until you find a supportive GP.

Was the light treatment PUVA or maybe UVB?

Good luck xxx

Hi Nicky,  Adam is right,  there is no doctor that would say that to you.

I take it you have not seen a doctor about the self harming.  Don't be afraid to, this is much  more common than people realise.  I too have some one very special to me that has SH in the past.

Go to the doctors about your guttate P,  he will be very professional even if he does see the scars from self harming.    UVB is probably the treatment you had last time, it's usually very effective for guttate.

Your replies have made me feel alot better about it, I didnt think about other factors such as tatoos, I suppose it is not my fault.

I do have a nurse that I went to the first time about my p, and she knows that I self-harm, I have an appoitment with her in 2 weeks, about my self harm issues. I could bring the p up then.

I am getting help for the self-harm so I suppose it is not like I am not trying to sort it out maybe I do deserve some help with my p then.

I do have some betnovate cream left from the last time I had the p, so I think I will use that for now.

Yeah I remember now the light treatment was UVB.

Thanks alot :)

Koala I have not been on here for like a year and I still remember you lol!

Of course you do,  you should never feel like you don't deserve help sweetheart.

And the betnovate should be fine to use in the mean time.
