Birth control and psoriasis
« on: January 13, 2012, 06:50:48 PM »
I started taking Microgynon recently and a few days later my psoriasis got dramatically worse. From reading similar topics from several years ago I know that many of you will see no difference but I am thinking of switching and would appreciate any patterns, positive and negative, between the pill and psoriasis that any of you might have seen so I know what to avoid and what to possibly ask for. Thanks.

I've been taking the same pill for 5 years and have just developed psoriasis in the last few weeks I don't think they are related but who knows I guess anything is worth a try x

I have been on Mercilon for the past 10 years and it hasnt changed my psoriasis either way, i had it before going on it then was clear pretty much then p flared again then was clear, i had only noticed my p flared when i got tonsilitis and now since i have been on drugs for pa, every time i change or have to come off any of those, and i dont even get tonsilitis any more , p is a disorder of the cells, the pill tricks the body with hormones making it think it is already pregnant , so i guess unless you flare when pregnant it shouldnt make a difference i dont think  :-\

i took microgynon for about a year. Didn't really affect my p. Maybe it was because I hadjust given birth and my p cleared while I was pregnant. It did cause me other problems though which are still ongoing 3 years later.
I would suggest you get the coil (the non hormone one - ask your GP about it) as it shouldn't affect your p.

Not so much in relation to birth control but I know many females find their psoriasis worsens around their period so any medication which interacts with your hormones would, in my opinion, have the ability to make your psoriasis flare.  I think its worthwhile mentioning to your GP and perhaps try one or two different brands.  As for the coil, there was some reluctance to fit coils to females who haven't had children unless that has changed in very recent years.

HI Natalie
I've had the implant now for ages. I'm on to my third one now.  It hasn't made any difference to my condition.  Its like evrything else thoit affects people differrently.  The only reason I mention it is, I have very few periods with the implant.  So if yours is hormonal in that way, the implant maybe worth thinking about.  PLus with all the other medication its nice to know that it is one less.
I hope you find something that suits

That's interesting Dev as I too am having some problems despite stopping the pill over 2 years ago now. The pill never had any affect on my P though.
