Giving Blood with Psoriasis
« on: October 21, 2011, 02:12:08 PM »
I can't believe that I have discovered today that I can in fact donate blood despite having Psoriasis. I've had Psoriasis since I was 6 and had always been given the impression that I couldn't donate.  Now at the age of 31 I have found out I can!  Can't believe that I have missed out on helping people for so many years!  I'd better start giving soon  :)

Give blood for medical studies and get paid for it  ;) Google for those companies doing medical trials, £60 for 600ml plus travel expenses. N.B. There will be a criteria to ensure your blood is good for research suitability.

Can't give blood though if you're on Acitretin, and can't do for at least a year after stopping.

Wasn't allowed to give blood a couple of years ago because arms had plagues on them. Inside of arm was clear but wasn't acceptable either. Does the roughness of P harbour germs? maybe I s'pose, which would explain why I  wasn't accepted as blood donor.

Same with me.

If you now live abroad, but lived in the UK during the Mad Cow outbreak, you cannot give blood.

Pity, because I think it is a marvelous thing to do to help others.

Five times over the past 20 years I have tried to donate in Asia, New Zealand and the USA. They don't care that I have IBD. They don't care that I have Psoriasis. But as soon as you mention a certain time period of living in the UK, they reject you outright.

Which is very worrying because I remember the government of the day (1980's/1990's) telling us all how safe British beef was to eat. Obviously not it seems now, if reactions from blood banks the world over are anything to go by.

I last ate British beef in 1993.

You would think by now that my blood would be considered safe for donation.

But apparently not.

The ban is for life.

Even if I lived to be 100, I can never donate blood overseas, due to living in the UK during the Mad Cow disease outbreak - or so the last blood bank doctor told me.

Obviously this rule is only for people living abroad, since anyone living in the UK now can donate in the UK at anytime.

Or does the MCD no blood donation rule also apply to British people currently in the UK who ate beef during the 1980's / 1990's?

Does anyone know? I would be interested to find out.

Maybe the authorities think everyone in the UK has MCD in their blood anyway, so it won't matter if you pass it on !!!  :o

can't give blood if you have ever used humira or enbrel...counts as regular needle use (or so I was told by a phlebotomist)

Personally I can't give as I am Type 1 Insulin Dependant Diabetic, but I did donate 30 times between age 18 and 30, before my diabetes started :)
