Haircuts - anyone used a mobile hairdresser before?
« on: January 07, 2012, 04:25:37 PM »
Hi. I have a question about getting your hair cut. If you've got scalp psoriasis or bad psoriasis on your face or neck area, then you'll know what a nightmare it is!

I can't face going to the barber's or hairdresser's to get my haircut and was thinking maybe a mobile hairdresser who knows about psoriasis might be the solution.

Has anyone ever used one before and what's your experience been? Thanks!  :)

I haven't used a mobile hairdresser since I was about 6 so can't really answer your question directly! However, I have trichotillomania, which basically causes me to pull out my hair, leaving me with bald patches and missing eyebrows and eyelashes. So visits to the hairdresser are terrifying for me, and I didn't go to one for eight years until my sister found me one who knows about trichotillomania.

My advice is to call your local salons and before you book an appointment or give your name explain that you have psoriasis and guage their reaction, so you know how they'll treat you. I'm certain that you'll be assured that it won't be a problem (nonetheless I'd call smaller, privately run salons and avoid salons like Tony & Guys, etc, who seem to employ ... shall I say slightly more shallow people (I'm sure that's a huge stereotyped overstatement, but it's what experience has taught me!)) When I spoke to my hairdresser about the conditions she sees she said none of them were ever a problem (except head lice!) and that people shouldn't be embarrassed. Easy for her to say though, right?! But try it, I was pleasantly surprised.

Most hairdressers will have seen it before so you shouldn't worry about it.  I'd also go against what the previous post says about salon choice, the higher end salons are usually a lot more friendly and staff have probably been trained on how to deal with customers with psoriasis etc. From my experience they are usually helpful and try give tips on different shampoos etc. to use, unlike your average high street barber where most of the workers speak limited english...

Thanks for the advice both.  :)

I think I might phone around some local hairdressers and see what they say.

Yep have a ring round, i'd be surprised if you get any negative - i am a trained hairdresser , it does help to know beforehand so when combing through hair are a bit more careful so as not to catch any lumps that could be painful but thats the only reason  :)

I agree with this. I would say that the better the salon the better the quality of training received etc. It took me two years to pluck up the courage to go to a new hairdresser when I relocated to London but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I go to a fairly expensive place and had a consultation with my stylist before she even touched my hair where I explained my condition, but she already knew quite a bit about it. We discussed my treatments and past experience with hair dye etc and she recommended some good shampoos. It was not the terrifying experience I was expecting at all! x

Hair dressers are genuinely nice people (well most of them), it's true the high end hair dressers have the most experience just tell them about it. My hairstylist was really helpful I got to know everyone around cos of it. It's funny, if it weren't for my psoriasis I wouldn't have got to know them as well as I do now, I go clubbing and nights out with them every so often :D I know it's weird but these bigger salons tend to hire well trained and cheerful people, it's always awkward at first, after a few times you'll be fine!
