Itchy during puva treatment
« on: August 27, 2010, 06:12:20 PM »
Hi everyone

can anyone help?

I am having sun bed treatment at hospital have been for last 5 weeks (3 times a week)
I am itching like mad. My skin is lots better no white scaling anymore just red marks so it is working but this itching is just driving me mad. I have itched before when psorisis was flaring up but never like this i,ve tried moisterisers and piriteze tablets but seeing no difference. Its now at the point where i cannot sleep and am exhausted, its getting me down now. I have mentioned it at the hospital and they have just said to do as i have done piriteze (can't use anything stronger due to drowseness and having to drive) and moisteriser.
Has anyone else had this problem, consultant said it could be puva itch and when i've looked this up it could be nerve damage.

Any advice would be greatly recieved.

Thanks
Kay :)

I had the exact same problem when  had PUVA and it got really distressing, I won't go into details but i got to the point of desperation as i had NO sleep for 3 weeks and as a nurse it was not safe. The nurses at the hospital didn't believe me  and no antihistamines helped, i was taking piriton hourly!!!! (be grateful you weren't a patient on my ward)  :( It was only when i went to see consultant and told him all the details about how it was affecting me that he stopped it completely and he prescribed, aqueous cream with 1% menthyl in it. Took about 3/4 weeks till itching stopped completely but it eased every day!
I begged them to stop the treatment but they kept telling me to persevere and in the end i just refused point blank to go which is how i got appt with consultant brought forward. I would recommend asking for that cream it was my lifeline!!!! :(

The itching should only last for a few weeks, but I used to 'cheat' and put a layer of suncream on my back where it itched the most.
