MTX
« on: May 19, 2004, 02:46:29 AM »
Is there anyone who's taken/taking this drug and had good results without the liver being affected.  I've been told by my consultant this is my "last resort" as i've had every other drug and none have kept my p under control for more than 2 yrs.  My p is so "difficult" and my skin too "sensitive" (to use their words). Sunshine causes pustules on my existing p and flares on unaffected areas.  After 31 yrs of living with this it seems the older i get the less tolerable the p gets. Has anyone else found this???  If so what do you do????

hi,ya

there's quite a few members having good results on
mtx, and will come along with there pos/ stories.

but what works for one person does not mean
it works for all, there are plenty of posts on here on mtx
search the web.  a lot derms/reumys dont keep up to date with lastest ,there's a wide differance in reports/ results, even the blood test,s that took over the liver bio/ are now being questioned?
the lastest theory is mtx is not much good on its own
should be taken with others and folic acid

i wash with dripobase/ no water ?have you tried

good luck hope all goes well

I have PPP although it is under control, I am 31 yers old nd have had it for 2 years, I tried almost everything...nothing worked for me except MTX...my liver is fine and I have now stopped taking it because I had an infection and my feet are clear of pustules..as long as you have good monitering it will hopefully catch any problems with liver etc..mtx saved my life...read as much as you can before you make any decisions!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.
I do understand what's right for one aint rite for another, just seems i always seem to be the one it aint rite for. (my god i'm on a downer today).

Tom, you mentioned Folic Acid, this was mentioned to me in hosp in Sept prior to me going on mtx but my derm says he dote see it has any significance.
What exactly is it prescribed for?
My next app with the drug monitoring nurses is nxt month and i wanna b armed wi sum facts before i go bursting in, which is likely anyway as i'm NOT at all impressed wi the progress of my p.  I know theres no quick fix but this is taking forever and a day.
Now heres a poser, im going out this fri, me m8's 40th, and am gonna drink a few lagers.  My liver count was up at the last blood test and the derm said it was ok to have a drink but not to take the mtx this wk but this aint gonna help the p is it? Before you say "neither is the alcohol" at this time in me life i could do wi a barrel full never mind a glass.
Wouldn't it be ok to take the mtx on sunday instead of friday or is everyone on mtx alcohol free?
I'd appreciate comments on this, pls

Hi David,

I have tried diprobase but only as a moisturiser.  I'm lucky in that i can use soap, my face isn't usually affected to such a degree.

I do use aqueous cream as an emollient in the bath as i find balneum too greasy and have frequently skated out of the bath and injured myself!!!

What is mtx supposed to be taken with?  My derm said he dint see the relevance of folic acid so i've never been given it or told its advantages etc.

Rest assured the questions will be asked at my next app.

Thanks for the advice

Hi Niki,

MTX depletes your normal Folic Acid levels.

Replacing it with 5mg Folic acid protects the liver from the toxic effects of the MTX.

But also reduces the effectiveness of the MTX.

The comprimise, in my Derms case, was to recommend taking it for 4 days only.

Like you I take my MTX on Fridays.

So on Thursday, Friday and Saturday I take no Folic Acid.

On the remaining days I take the 5mg.

MTX stresses the liver.

Alcohol stresses the liver.

Conclusion ...

IF you take MTX ... don't drink is the ideal thing to do.

But it's your mates Birthday and you'll promise never to drink again ... so drink!

IF you must ...  :P

But to drink really is a no no!

Shifting the taking of the MTX to the Sunday will help reduce your liver stresses.

PS .. I don't drink now that I am on MTX.

But would gladly help you finish the barrel off ...  ;D

folic acid the debate continues...lol

My derm originally said a huge no to folic acid with mtx...but after I became very depressed my husband did some research which showed a depletion in folic acid can cause or worsen depression...evetually talked derm around and have to say it helped me..mtx can cause low folic acid I believe...no longer on MTX as in remission and no liver damage, mtx was the answer for me.

As Tom says drinking really is a no no but I did have the odd one, but my derm wasnt happy and even said if I wanted to drink he would take me off it( I dont drink really)so did as I was told and now I can more than make up for it. ;D
