Newbie..could it be Impetigo?
« on: December 28, 2011, 08:10:29 PM »
Hi everybody, I am new to the forum so hope I have posted in the right forum!
I am wondering whether anyone could shed any light on my psoriasis.
I am 48 yrs old and, up until 3 months ago, I had never had psoriasis and it does not run in the family.
I suddenly started developing pustules on my palms and soles of my feet and also on my head.
I visited my Dermo who confirmed that it was Psoriasis.  Unfortunately, he wasn't the most talkative of people and the one question I specially wanted to ask him was, just before I started getting psoriasis I came into contact with a child that had Impetigo!
Do you think that I may have caught Impetigo and it has presented itself as Psoriasis? and if so, would have course of antibiotics clear it up (hopes!!!!)
He has given me some scalp application and dermovate ointment for my skin.  The Dermovate seems to work on my hands but not yet on my feet.
I have to say though that the scalp application doesn't seem to be doing an awful lot, apart from making it more crusty.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to use on my hair in the way of shampoo/conditioner.  At the moment I'm using Polytar and a Redken Conditioner so if anyone knows of any nice conditioner I could use which would not aggravate the situation I would love to know what it is?
Neither my scalp or my hands/feet ever itch.
Oh dear, this seems to have turned into an essay, sorry, didn't mean it to be so long but if anyone could give me any advice please :)

Hi Sarah,

It certainly doesn't sound like Impetigo, which is usually "crusty" round the edges and should be spotted by any GP from about 15 feet! Impetgo is contagious, P is not.

Get back to your Derm or GP.

Mine started similarly at 39/40

Never had i had a problem with skin and no history of it in family but i had a bout of shingles and that seemed to trigger it. Had you had any sort of illness just prior to it starting? Or any sort of stress

Thank you for your replies.  I too would be absolutely astounded if it was Impetigo and my Dermo hadn't spotted it. Guess I'm just clutching at straws there. (it comes to something when you hope you've got Impetigo LOL)
Hi Arizona, I did have an extremely stressful situation in March when a close family member died of cancer suddenly but, as that was 9 months ago, do you think it could only just start showing now?  I suppose it depends on how long your skin takes to renew itself.
The other thing that happened a few months ago is that I was cleaning the kitchen floor (as you do), stood up quickly and hit my head on a cupboard door (it still makes me wince thinking about it now). That caused a scab and my scalp P seemed to start after that, closely followed by my palms and soles.
There seems to be conflicting advice on whether to take the scabs off before applying Polytar shampoo to make it work more effectively.  As I seem to spend all my time desperately trying NOT to pick at it and being told off by Hubby, this seems like a good plan.  However, I can see that it could make it much worse.
Do you do that or is it better to leave it?

Sometimes it can be after severe stress but will come out a few months after so it is possible it could have been trigger.

Re scalp p
best thing i know is to massage coconut oil in and leave for a few hours then gently comb through to help remove , picking at it otherwise will just make it sore
if you dont have coconut oil to hand and want to give it a go, olive oil should suffice for now

You can get flares at anytime, but once you have p, you tend to notice that they can coincide with stressful times (even with a several month delay). You could ask your derm to carry out tests to double check the diagnosis, if they didn't at the initial appointment. Not every treatment works for everyone, so don't be surprised if you have a cream that doesn't appear to help but others rave how great it is. P is like that sometimes. Best of luck.
