I remember someone telling me that they found P first recorded in medical books dating back to 1700 and yes IT WAS COAL TAR that was prescribed though it said that by the sea the traditional treatment was seaweed?

Isn't there some debate over whether Leprosy cases recorded in ancient times was quite often misdiagnosed Psoriasis.

History of P

Although the name psoriasis was not introduced for many years the actual condition of psoriasis was first talked of by the Greek Physician, Hippocrates who lived between 460 and 377 BC. The condition has indeed been around for a long time, with our current knowledge evolving over hundreds of years.

Psoriasis was again mentioned in the first century by Cornelius celsus, a Roman author. Celsus described it as the fourth variant of impetigo, a condition caused by staphlococcus pyogenes. This condition appears as red patches with watery blisters on the skin.

Joseph Jacob Plenck (Vienna 1776) wrote of Psoriasis as being amongst the group of desquamative (scaly or scale like) diseases. He did not delve further to differentiate it from other dermatological conditions.

The English dermatologist, Robert Willan (1757 ~ 1812) recognized psoriasis as an independent disease. He identified two categories. Leprosa Graecorum was the term he used to describe the condition when the skin had scales. Psora Leprosa described the condition when it became eruptive.

In 1841 Ferdinand Hebra, a Viennese dermatologist worked on Willan's notes and was the first to ascribe the name 'psoriasis'. It was Hebra who described the clinical picture of psoriasis that is used today. The hereditary factor of psoriasis had already been established by this time.

You trumped me there Dave  :P  So I'll give a slightly different version  ;) ;D

History Of Psoriasis

Originally considered a curse from the gods, cases of Psoriasis have been documented since the days of Greek mythology, almost 2,600 years ago.

However, it took centuries before it was actually identified by Aurelieus Celsus, a Roman scholar who referred to Psoriasis as "impeto", the Latin word for "attack". The Bible makes reference to Psoriasis but mistakenly calls it leprosy.

For hundreds of years, people who suffered from Psoriasis were ostracized, often forced to ring warning bells alerting others in their paths and to wander as homeless beggars. Their very appearance was considered unclean, some even suffered the same fate as lepers, including being burnt at the stake in the 14th century.

During the Middle Ages, it was thought that all scaling conditions were leprosy. In fact, it wasn't until the 1700's that Psoriasis was differentiated from other skin diseases. Psoriasis was recognized as a specific and separate clinical entity in 1808 by Robert Willan who at first called it "lepra" derived from the Greek words "loops" (the epidermis) and "lepo"(the scale).

Finally in 1840, he renamed the disease Psoriasis - a term derived from the Greek work "psora" meaning "itch". Amazingly, Psoriasis was a disease that had been misunderstood from more than 2,000 years before it was clearly defined and named what we know it as today.

Lol. Maria!  :) about 20 of my young years. Fell of a bike when I was 8 and gashed my elbow and it started from that and spread. Met a nurse once (unfortunatly treatment reasons not in a nice winebar!!!!) who was so covered with P, she had no photos of her untill she was 30 when she had a misscarrige and it cleared up. She had heard that it can be triggered on/off by traumatic events??? She also had another problem (THink this should be in the what else have you got subject!) where if she straightened her body a certain way she would temporarily paralysed, due to a nerve in her shoulder or somewhere and she nearly drowned once because.
Er, anyway, back to the subject! P's been around that looong! Glad to see human understanding of others misfortune hasnt changed in all those years!!!!
Where did u guys pick up this info? They need to do  a tv documentry or something to raise awareness about P? Any1 got a cam corder????
