P in the family, and stress etc........
« on: October 30, 2003, 05:42:02 AM »
I`m sorry if i seem a little naive on the "P" subject, but does P run in families or is it in all of us just waiting for the trigger to be pulled.I gather its still a comparative mystery to the medical guys so i`m not expecting a scientifically  detailed reply  ;D.
My Brother suffered an unexpected attack of P in the form of 1-2 cm blothces all over his body some 5 years ago and this coincided with a very stressful time at work.
He was referred to a derm and only after a short time on steroid creams was given all over UV treatment..Thankfully this cleared 95% of it .The only remaining P was in his groin area and this has now diminished. He was told that P would always be there from now on.
Since 1998 when my father passed away i had not known "P" at all.But from about a year after my problems began, although i did`nt know it was P at the time..I`ve had (and still have) anxiety problems and i`ve experienced a couple of panic attacks that i can link to a resurgence of my P.Though i dont wish to burden this site with those problems,i hear and have read that stress, anxiety and stressful situations seem to be a trigger to our unwelcome "P" friend.
Your thoughts are most welcome.
and i`m so glad i found this site.
Love to all....Pete.

hi. We didnt have a clue why i got P, i was 16 when it first started. But my mum had been diagosed with Rumertoid Arthritis and she mentioned my P to her consultant and he said they were connected. I dont know if thats entirely the explaination but it would explain where i got P from as no one else in the family has it.

Stress is a big trigger too.....but i find i get a flare after all the stress has calmed down for some reason.

luv

Hi Pete

It does seem that P does indeed have a genetic factor. It is quite common for it to run in families. However, it can jump generations or run sideways and affect cousins too..

So if the gene is passed onto you in some way, a traumatic and stressful event can 'trigger' it into becoming active. Then again, you might have the gene, it doesn't trigger and you might pass it on unaffected...

And then, of course, there are those who have no history of P in any of their family (distant or close) and they end up with it....

:-/

My experience has been that once the P appears, it is with you for life. Very few people I know have had it appear and then disappear, never to return. However, some suffer seriously severe P and others just get the odd patch on the elbow or knee...and there ups and downs in the equation too! Sometimes I have it quite badly, other times it is fine and is restricted to only moderate coverage.

???

It is a commonly held thought, both here and with the medical community, that stress can worsen P. I can't say myself..I have a pretty stressful time over the last few months and mine isn't too bad! Then, when I have been perfectly happy, I have been covered!

Strange condition...

Glad you have found the site. I am sure others will put their tuppence in too!

Hi Pete - it definitly seems to be in the family - i've got it - so's my dad, my aunt and my grandmother suffered too - There is definitely a big stress link for me too - although this can be a strange as sometimes it seems to flare once i've finally relaxed after the stressful time.

Hey Pete
My Nan had P as did my mum and her 2 sisters, they only had it really mild, just a few little patches on the elbows.  I have it alot worse than any other menber of the family.  I do think stress plays a part in it...but the thing is its the P I get stress about so I seem to be going round in circles.  My Boyfriend's dad has just developed P and he's 54, no one in the family has it that he's know's about.  I had the thought that I might pass it on to my children one day.  Anyway keep smiling.  :D

Seems to be some p in my family, but no real link.  My great aunt had p on my dads side.  My dad (who is one of ten) gets a little patch on his body, but none of his brothers or sisters or their kids do.

I have had it since i was 5 and it definately flairs in times of stress.

I have 3 kids of my own, and my eldest gets a small patch at the back of her neck, but my other two are clear.

So although they say its genetic, link seems a bit random.

I can relate to this SJ my P seems to be clearer when I'm stressed compared to when everything is going smoothly, I often wonder if it's because the stress we are going through tends to make us worry less about the P and that it's actually stressing about P that makes P worse than just stress in general causing p. Does all of that make any sense ???
