sick as a child
« on: July 09, 2004, 06:22:08 PM »
I'm curious to see if anyone else was sick as a child?

I seem to be the only one out of 5 that was always so called sick as a child, I'm not talking minor coughs or colds, but as a child I got epilepsy (grand mal) and grew out of epilepsy only to get P?

Is there a cycle here??

no but funnily enough I had a "thing" that sounds a bit similar to Joanne's post on the sleep thread - basically I would be wide awake at night and start shaking uncontrollably - this started when i was about 14 or so and took about 10 or 11 years for me to "grow out of".  Now my mum took me to the doctor who gave me various pills, which didn't really have any effect, and then he told my mum that if the last lot of pills didn't work he would send me for a brain scan, and sort of discussed a form of epilepsy as one of the possibilities.  Now when he said that I panicked because the week before I'd watched "your life in their hands" on tv and it had been a brain operation where the patient was awake, and cos I was 14 i automatically assumed that would happen to me.  So, to cut a long story short, I was never actually diagnosed with anything because as soon as he said that I started covering up these attacks so that my  mum thought i was "cured" and didn't have to go to the doctors again.

Started with migraines when i was about 15/16

I had all the usual childhood ones, and terrible migraines usual brought on by sinus infections, but other than that I was very healthy.

no illnesses as such as a child - hardly ever ill... broke so many bones and things through childhood antics so did spend a lot of time in Casualty :)

Uhm... usually childhood illnesses, measles, german measles, chickenpox, mumps.

Had them all... twice!!

Then nowt until I was 13.... I was bleeding internally, they never found out exactly why... but it caused me to be chronically anaemic with a blood count of 5.5 (for those of you who understand your blood count... you'll know that is pretty low).  At first they thought I had leukaemia but was cleared after they took some bone marrow.  They then believed it was something called a Meckel's Diverticulum... a remnant of structures within the fetal digestive tract that were not fully reabsorbed before birth. Approximately 2% of the population has a Meckel's diverticulum, but only a few develop symptoms.  After several scans they still weren't sure, and decided it may have been a reactin to an aspirin... so I was discharged, the anaemia treated.. but never any the wiser as to why I had been passing blood.

Discovered I had a gall stone at 16.. went in for the operation, they did routine blood tests and found I had an over active parathyroid gland to go with it!!

So... ended up having two operations.  One on my stomach, the other on my neck about 8 months apart.

Between the age of 13 and 17 I was in and out of hospital no end  :-/

So.. yeah, guess you could say I was a bit of a sick kid all in all!

As a child suffered from the normal kids things, but also hayfever, tonsilitus (S?) and colds - sniffing all winter from colds and the same in the summer from hayfever - you could say a right old snotty bratt!
