Smoking again :S
« on: August 01, 2004, 08:56:17 AM »
Sorry to bring this up again but I did a search and can't find what I was looking for.

I smoke and every morning I wake up with a sore throat due to this nasty habit. I have also read previously about P being triggered by sore throats.

Could the irritation caused by the cigarettes be worsening my P?

The fllare up in guttate psoriasis is because of the Group A streptococci infection.

Strep throat can need antibiotics to contain and get rid of the infection.

Smoking in itself will not give you the kind of sore throat that can cause flare up...unless you are smoking with a sore strep throat!

You probably need to give the fags up!

Smoking is not is not 'offically' seen as 'bad' for most P. It is proven to make PPP worse however and those with PPP are advised not to.

Many people here have looked at a connection between smoking and P. Many have given up and seen no difference to their P. Many have taken up smoking when they've already got the stuff and see no worsening (unless its PPP I presume).

But smoking is baddd for you. Dehydrates and dries the skin...gotta be bad for you!

Smoking also does something with white cells in the body (too medically technical for me to either understand or try to explain) and, apparently, P sufferers have something weird going on with white cells (don't ask me what...something technical to do with the immune system!). Some clever derms think some smoking P sufferers are more at risk of lung cancer than a normal smoker  :-/ Have yet to find or understand anything on the net about this...

PS give up them fags cos you sound husky this morning!  ;D

SJ is right about smoking and PPP - female smokers are more likely to get PPP than non-smokers, although stopping smoking won't make it go away, once you've got it it's too late.

I agree with SJ its strep throat that worsens P.  Conection with PPP and smoking I haven't heard that.  My derm does say don't stop while you are having a major flare as it will more than likely increase stress levels and make your P worse.

Hehe I was planning on becoming the new female Neil Diamond and rattle some windows with that bassy boom  ;D

I'm wondering if I have a long term strep thingy going on and the cigarettes are just elongating the thing.

I know, I know... you're totally staggered by all the medical terminology in that sentence aren't you??  ;D

But have you got a temperature, feel fluey, feel unwell or got pustules down the back of your throat?

(these are the common symptoms of a strep throat infection).

Nowt wrong with asking for a swab at the GP for strep.

But still think it is the smoking!

;) :P ;)

I have had those other things over the past few months, but I did have the flu.

And yes I think it's smoking too and HAVE TO give up.

 :( :( :(

Oh well, it's for the best if you can do it! Think how good you'll feel a few months down the line!

But why don't you go down to the GP and ask for a strep swab to make certain? I think in some it can live down the back of the gob and not give you symptoms...
