Special clothes
« on: September 25, 2002, 09:51:30 AM »
My 5year old daughter has just been diagnosed with psoriasis. My first task is to get her some special underclothes - her lesions are worst at the top of the legs where they are being irritated by the elasticated leg of her underclothes.

Can anyone tell me if I can buy boxer-short type underclothes - for girls? Something with a loose leg? Or should I get some made by a dressmaker?

Thanks

Edel :)

Hi Edel, and welcome ;)

I'm so sorry to hear about you daughter - isn't it sad when the little ones get confronted with it so young...  :'(

I think you must be able to find the kind of underwear you're looking for.... I don't know about the ones with a loose leg, but I very much like the seamless shorts in fabrics like tactel or other microfiber; they really let the skin breathe, and having no seams at all, they don't irritate either..... Dim do them (Dim Skin or Dim Absolu), Coccoon, and Footsie too (and an italian mark as well, but I don't remember the name... sorry...)

I, of course, buy them in adult sizes, but this being said, I always buy large or Xtra large, and I'm a size 8.... :-/  So even if they don't do children's sizes, maybe the small sizes could do just as well?

I'm not in the UK, but I'm sure you should be able to get one or more of those over there...

I've looked on the internet for them, but it seems that underwear manufacturers are not happy about cyberspace... ;D

If you (and your daughter) would prefer something with a loose leg.... how about buying some cotton leggings for her, and then cutting off the legs at the right length? She could have some fancy colours and fun prints then, so maybe sha would feel a bit less bad about it? :-/

Take care, hug to both you and the li'l un ;) - and any more questions you may have, feel free to ask :)

You can get soft cotton boxers for boys at that age, but I know girls don't like the idea of wearing boys boxers!

However, buy then in white and dye them pink etc etc?

I bought some lovely white soft boxers for a six year old boy the other day and they feel lovely + they wouldn't rub your little one at all.  :)

Sorry I can't come up with a better idea!

Hi there.

Think I'd go for soft, close fitting shorts, or even the bottom half (ie shorts) of summer pyjamas.

SJ, you didn't tell us where you bought your lad's soft cotton boxers??

Good luck

Hi

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Letting you know how I got on, in case anyone else ever needs to search:

Boys white boxer shorts are almost impossible to get! I've tried all major stores in Ireland and some in UK - boys must like coloured underclothes more! Also, many boxer shorts are very masculine, with not very pretty (well, horrible!) elastic around the waist. So, I've left the boy's departments

But I have had some success. In ladies (adult) size, I found exactly what I needed - loose-legged briefs, in a vest/brief set. With the help of some very inelegant stitching to make them fit a 5 year old waist, they have worked a treat. The ones I got are cotton, with the "Little Miss ..." series books depicted on them (Little Miss Giggles etc), which was an added bonus in convincing a little girl to wear them.

I also got a summer bikini for an 8 year old, in the 1950s style - so again loose legged. But daughter thought they looked too like shorts - she might have had a point.

I also tried a variety of shorts, but none really worked, as
they were just too bulky under trousers and dresses.

Hope this is of some help to someone sometime!

Reading your post about the bikini made me wonder if those sun-screen suits they now make for kids on the beach. Would they be of any use?  ??? I know they're all in one so nipping to the loo would be a pain, but they are made of a thinner material and if you got a larger size they might be loose enough not to irritate? and they do go on down to the knees and elbows so would protect your daughter's skin ....

Jo :)
