Sphaeranthus indicus (East Indian Globe Thistle) – A promising natural remedy for psoriasis

Results: Of the 74 subjects recruited, 47 completed the study per protocol. Forty and twenty three percent of the subjects treated with 2.8 gm/day and 1.4 gm/day of S. indicus extract achieved PASI75 response whereas 14% of the placebo treated subjects achieved PASI75. Fifteen percent of subjects treated with 2.8 gm/day achieved PASI90 response. Histopathology and gene expression analysis also supported improvement in PASI score. Histopathology (hemotoxin & eosin staining) revealed complete absence of parakeratosis and neutrophils; restoration of granular layer; reduction in rete ridge elongation in epidermis and reduction in dilation of papillary capillaries and absence of neutrophils in dermal infiltrate in 35% and 38% of subjects receiving 2.8 gm/day and 1.4 gm/day of S. indicus extract respectively. Gene expression profiling (KRT-16, FABP-5, S100A9, TNF- α, Serpin-B4, Interferon-β) revealed response in 14 subjects in high dose group, 5 in low dose group and 4 subjects treated with placebo. Pyonephrosis (reported in one subject at 2.8 gm/day) was the only serious adverse event (possibly) related to S. indicus extract. One event of hyperchlorhydria and hyperglycemia was reported in 2.8 gm/day and 1.4 gm/day groups respectively.

Interesting, although a larger test study would have been nice.  I notice the Tinefcon web site offers a month's supply of this herb for $50, which is rather steep; I am not rushing out to try it.  However if this herb proves popular one would hope the price would drop substantially.

Still, this can only make the makers of biologic drugs just a wee bit nervous.   :o

i wouldn't belive it.
There are dozens of different aminoacids, cytokines, minerals, fatty acids, retinoid receptors, mRNA involved in psoriasis and since that I belive in certain combination of substances .
Maybe I will belive if they will show lab test showing which interleukins it is targeting.

The global market for Arthritis / Psoriasis drugs was worth $35 billion in 2008 out of ... English Name: East Indian Globe-Thistle. Indian Name: Gorakhmundi ...

certainly seems to provide an alternative to conventional treatments.
