A study on psoriasis and CAM
« on: February 13, 2009, 05:24:13 PM »
Hi there, I am a 4th year pharmacy student at the University of Brighton and I also suffer from Psoriasis. I am currently working on a study around the area of psoriasis and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The study aims to investigate if psoriasis sufferers in the U.K. have tried any complementary or alternative medicine (CAM), what they have used and if they have found it effective. CAM encompasses many things including homeopathy, herbalism, hypnotherapy, diet control, yoga,Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ichthyotherapy.I intend cumulating peoples successes and failures and peoples reasons for choosing or not choosing CAM. I feel this study would be useful for helping us understand what and if any alternative treatments are effective. I will carry out my study through an online questionnaire aimed only at psoriasis sufferers. The questionnaire should only take five minutes to complete . Participants will remain anonymous and all information will be treated as confidential. I will make the results of my study available to the PHO after completion. Hopefully the findings will be useful.
here is the link- It would be GREAT if you could participate

I found a problem with the structure of your survey.

If a person has used more than 1 CAM, as most of us here have, the survey does not allow you to give answers for each of them...you allow people to tick more than 1 box in 'which CAM have you used' but the follow up questions are set out as if only 1 box has been ticked.

For instance, I ticked 3 boxes. 2 of the treatments I used were not effective at all, 1 was. How can I give clear information to you in the follow up questions? How do you know which CAM was effective or ineffective?

Sorry for that....we have similar problems here when people create polls!

Hi, I just read your answers there. The text box titled "Why you recommend/not recommedend your chosen CAM" allows you to give qualitative information about what you have found effective and what you have not found effective. This questionaire has been published for over a week so I cannot amend it if i want seamless integration of answers, im sorry if it is not clear.

Hi, after consideration I have actually added a question "If you chose more than 1 treatment, which treatment did you find the best- you may pick none" thanks for pointing that out.

Hello

Would you like me to do it again? Or would that skew your results?

I suppose my query was based around the fact you not only looking at what CAMs psoriasis sufferers use, but what they found effective...probably me being dumb  ;D

Yes do it again! I know which answers you gave the first time because of your comments at the bottom so I will not count them. I am very interested in learning what you found useful- thanks again for pointing that out.

I did  ;)

Not prescribed by a doctor you see....thought of traditionally as 'alternative'.

i've just done your survey and tried to be as honest as I could. BUT I wouldn't draw any conclusions from any info you get from the survey - where/what are your controls? how objective is this? I don't rule out CAM but it works on the head more than the disease, and each head is very different!

Hello I have psoriasis and psoriatic athritis too, I firmly believe that a healthy diet fish fresh vegatables excerise does help. I can not understand health care professionals always wishing to give medication to pateints that can damage their health even further and why it is that alternative treatments are frowned upon at the end of the day most modern day medicines were derived from a plant. It is important to keep your skin moisturised every day and watch your diet it is a complete life style change but for the best for your overall health and well being. I am in a lot of pain in my feet and it does get me down as I love walking and I can't do this so well I just wish I could elevate the pain in some way. I wish everyone the best of luck in finding a treatment that works for them but think long and hard about what modern day medication can do to you overall health. :-*

Hi

I am with Dara O'Brien on this one.  Science took all the good stuff.  All the rest is Potpourri.

For those who said science worked for them: What do you mean exactly for science (biologics?) and what do you mean for 'worked', are you clear from psoriasis? (like noone could say you had psoriasis?)
