A VERY CLEAR SCALP!
« on: April 20, 2006, 02:44:31 PM »
can't remember the last time my scalp felt so good! i have had scalp psoriasis for years coming and going and using all sorts of medicated shampoos in between. however, after a really back outbreak of guttate psoriasis in february (which has covered me from head to toe, and scalp being worst its ever been!) i decided to do some heavy research, which led me to coconut oil.

i bought a large tub of it (solid form which you need to melt down, but i put near the radiator - does the job!) and spent an hour massaging the oil into my scalp. tied hair back and went to bed with an old pillowcase on. washed it off in the morning (2 good washes to remove all oil) and i haven't looked back! my scalp has been flake free since (over a month ago now). i am still amazed at how well it has worked. i still have guttate all over body but have started to use the oil on my face and thats nearly cleared up now. RESULT!!! i've just visited dermo to start a light treatment course to speed up the rest of the guttate on my body but would definately recommend using the coconut oil. i bought mine from Holland & Barrett, cost £9.99 but its a large tub and definately worth it! :)

I'm glad the coconut oil works for you.  Perhaps I'll have a go with that.  I have tried olive oil, its good for moisturising but doesn't de-scale enough for me.  How very lovely that sounds.  I still use the olive oil now and then if I run out of cocois.  Coconut oil sounds like it might work even better.  Coconut oil is an ingredient of cocois but there is also salicylic acid which kind of burns away the flakes.  I would prefer not to use a coal tar prep, but it is the only thing I've found effective so far.  That said, my scalp P is recalcitrant and nothing is really much use, just alleviates the itching and gets rid of the dandruff.  I hate scalp P!

Kelly, you're welcome to PM me, though I don't always reply very quickly.  Things move slow in Land of Arthritis, where I currently reside.   :D

Don't panic though!  Everyone here is friendly, though we may argue about stuff sometimes.  We basically want to help one another.  Hang in there.

If it is any consolation, my legs are also fairly hard to get clear of P.  Perhaps in a good sunny summer.  My P is not so bad these days, though scalp and nails are playing up.  The arthritis is a whole different story and has had quite an impact on my day to day life.

It can be difficult to deal with P in itself, my P was severe as a child.  You will read so many things on here which will strike a chord with you.  Whether it is threads on treatments, or dealing with the emotional side (like how to tell your new boyfriend, or people say hurtful things about your skin).

Good luck with your skin and happy reading.  I bet you get loads of coconut oil for a tenner.  Thats what I'm hoping anyway!  ;)

My mum has psoriasis on her scalp, and here am I selling Fijian coconut oil at my online store and I didn't know to offer it to her!  Thanks for letting us know about it.  I'll ask her to try it out.

I have PA but not P, long may it continue that way too.

Cheers
Lesley
