To start i will repost Arts posts on Dr Bronners peppermint shampoo (which i have found success with) and also his experiences with Do groo shampoo
from Art
" Hi bj,

Just thought I'd comment on Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap that you said was effective for your scalp p.
I started using it right after you posted about it and it is a different type of soap to be sure. I applied an approximate tablespoon to my hair and lathered it up at the very beginning of my shower and left it there for the duration of the shower rinsing it out as the final step of my shower.
For the first week I noticed that a lymph node on the lower rear right side of my neck, which is usually slightly swollen and fairly soft , got more swollen and harder, and in fact, it became a little tender to the touch which I have only noticed when my scalp p is really bad. My scalp p was not bad at the start of using Dr. Bronner's soap, but it was persistent and generally a nuisance.
By the second week that lymph node had returned to normal and pretty much stayed that way all week.
My scalp didn't seem to change much, still flaking with no thick buildup areas. At the beginning of the third week, that lymph node started to swell slightly and harden just a bit. During the third week I noticed that the flaking was increasing to significantly worse than when I started, but I wanted to at least finish three weeks for the experiment and possibly 4 if I could. At the end of the third week, my scalp was definitely flaking more and I had become concerned that it wad headed out of control so I was forced to end the experiment with Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap for scalp p at three weeks.

So like many things to do with psoriasis, what works for one person may not work for another person.

After completing the Dr B's experiment on my scalp I moved on to my next experiment which was to try another product that I have read about on this website and others sites that has helped  people with their scalp p. At the best, it has helped some people to rid themselves of the outward signs of scalp p and at the worst, it has been ineffective for some. Again, what works for some , does not seem to work for others.

"At the rate I am going through this bottle, I guestimate it will last another week. The bottle cost less than $10 at any major chain pharmacy like a CVS, Walgreens and even Walmart. I had never seen or heard of  this product prior to actually going and looking for it........much like Dr. Bronner's soap. I found it in the ethnic hair product section.

From everything I read, it seems that Doo Gro, does not seem to stimulate most users hair growth, but I did notice that the directions say it may help to eliminate dandruff. I got the impression that people who were not using it for scalp p were using it as a type of hair conditioner.
I did a quick google search of each ingredient combined with the word, "psoriasis" and it seems like each ingredient has links suggesting potential benefit for psoriasis.
This is the product:

"I can say that I am reasonably happy with this product after one week of use and in some of the anecdotal reports I read, it seems that if the product is effective for you within the first week, symptoms may continue to diminish over time. That would be a big plus, but I will need to pick up another bottle in order to see if this is how it works out for me though.

I would also like to add that this product has a mild scent which I like, but I can't quite describe.......my best guess is that maybe the smell of pineapple, but much milder. The fragrance also seems to diminish rather quickly.
This company has quite a few other products and I did by one other one because it had similar ingredients with more wax in it to make it thicker. I use this one in and around my ears and it has definitely helped to reduce the flaking there as well. This product has a stronger smell to it though. Not a bad smell, just stronger and different than the thinner product.

Lastly, the first and possibly largest ingredient on the ingredient list is mineral oil and I have tried that for my scalp p in the past as well as several of the other ingredients listed, but none of them individually were as good as this combination is for me. Also given that there are several oils in this product it can be too greasy for some people to use. I try and apply as closely to the scalp as possible to try and limit the amount that goes on the hair itself. It does seem to leave my hair softer and shinier and I also seem to lose less hair each day, but that could just be my hair going through a cycle phase.

hi Art,

i have a question...how do you know the good results of the last week weren't due in part to the first 3 weeks on DrBonners's....one could say what you were seeing is the delayed benefits of the peppermint shampoo even when initially it appeared worse. not uncommon with many medical treatments...i wish you would have had a time lag between the two ..a few weeks anyway but good luck with your new direction....never heard of  shampoo penetrating or effecting  a lymph node...

Hi  bj,

I guess that is always a possibility .

My scalp was noticeably worsening after three weeks and I did not want to risk continuing with it. You said to try it for three weeks to four weeks and I did make it to the three week mark and was careful to use it everyday with the approximate tablespoon amount.
When I started with the Dr Bronner's Peppermint soap my scalp was flaking but not building up to where you start to feel the thickening or lumps through your hair. At three weeks of Dr. B's everyday, I could start to feel small areas where there was that "thick feel", for lack of a better way to describe it.

That lymph node has always been a type of indicator for me of the general condition of my scalp p.......I don't understand the how and why of it, but it seems that the worse my scalp p, the larger and harder it gets and when my scalp is better, it gets smaller and softer .

The Doo Gro Stimulating Growth Oil, for now, does seem to be helping noticeably and that lymph node has reduced in size and is softer now while I have less flaking than before  the initiation of the Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap, but it has only been a week and I will continue this experiment to 4 weeks if it continues to help.
Here is a link to the video of the lady who it seems may have started this idea:

Not very scientific to be sure and only anecdotal, but I think a lot of things people with psoriasis try probably fall into that category. I was skeptical after watching the video and that made me start to read the replies to get an idea of what other people thought about it.
In going though the over 500 replies that viewers made, the results vary considerably from zero to much better or in her case, clear. She refers to it in the video as a cure, but as I read through some of her replies, she seems to come back to reality and talks more in terms of how it can help some people with scalp psoriasis. It looks like she has had that video up since January of 2009 and she did update in a reply in the thread after about two years of use where she mentioned that she was using the Doo Gro as a maintenance therapy to manage her scalp p. I think she said something like twice every three weeks or if she felt any plaques starting. It is a long thread and you have to wade through some harsh posts to get to the ones where people actually discuss their own results. I think this was discussed on this site at one time a couple of years back.

first, i never suggested to wash your hair daily...i think that's too drying and can bring on other problems...i guess some would feel they have to remove the flakes daily..i can understand that and don't have any advice..perhaps some for of natural oil..but the peppermint to me seems strong, too strong to wash daily
second...i said through three weeks..and i had moderate hair p..some may need more time..and it has to be in the hair for 10-15 minutes i think
third. the thickening and small clumps i feel is a positive sign  due ,my guess, to slower skin turnover..initially i had misinterpreted it as a worsening also
fourth, on the lymph..i think you have the cart before the horse, its lymph nodes that swell due to some infection, tcell or cytokine increase etc then the scalp gets more involved.
finally, my singular improvement may be involved with the other supplements i take...the D, ibu, b12, etc..in spite of or because of,,,all too many variables to know what is involved..but i still think the shampoo alone will control scalp p if other inflammation in the body is also controlled.

nothing works in a week except steroid drugs ..that's my belief,  but more power to you and hopeful success with the do groo product..

I would say that was a bad assumption on my part about using Dr. Bronners everyday. I am used to showering and shampooing my hair everyday and just never thought of doing otherwise. It's not a matter of feeling a need to wash flakes away, just habit.
I do take twenty minute showers as I find them very relaxing so length of application was adequate, just the frequency was too often. How often do you shampoo your hair with it? If I am taking a shower everyday, do you recomend just rinsing the hair on the day('s) with no Dr. Bronner's? I am asking because I have enough Dr. B's left to experiment again when I am done with the Doo Gro experiment.

I have completed two weeks of using this Doo Gro Stimulating Growth Oil and I continue to be happy with its effects on my scalp psoriasis.

There is definitely less flaking than even last week and the red areas are gone or are light pink or normal looking. No more large flakes, no thickened scalp areas or large patches of clearly flakey scalp. This is the best my scalp has been in years! At this rate, I may get to wear a black shirt without all the snow on my shoulders!

The areas around my ears are no longer red and flakey looking. Not clear, but no longer obvious that I have psoriasis there. With these results, I feel like I fall right into the group of people who responded to that youtube video with positive responses. Not clear, but definitely better. The hairline areas around my temples look clear or as close to clear as I have seen them look in recent memory. My interior ears are also much clearer with much less flaking and much reduced turnover rate however I do get an occassional itch there but it goes away quickly on its own. I am very happy about this because it required the use of a topical steroid to control this in the past and I have not used any topical steroid on them since starting with the Doo Gro, so that is a definite plus!
I had a friend look at my scalp today who has seen it at various stages of psoriasis progression and he told me this is easilly the best my scalp has looked to him!

Given the current results, I will continue this experiment for at least another week . My bottle is almost empty now so I will need to get a new one within the next day or two. I'm trying to see if I can get by with using less of the Doo Gro and still maintain the effect.......so far so good.

The shampoo I use is amazing! I have tried allsorts and have found the one that works for me on ebay of all places. I dont know why they dont sell it in the shops but they should. I told my GP about it and showed her my scalp (which is clear now bytheway) and she was really impressed but she said she will still prescribe PTar to patients as shes not allowed to endorse any other shampoo. I said she could recommend the shampoo? she said no. Great help there then!!!!
the shampoo is called psoriasis and eczema shampoo by humankind organics and the owner gives a great explanation of the reason it works. I have posted on makeup (for my gf) about the stuff girls put on their faces by the same company for Psoriasis and she loves it, there is stuff out there but we have to look for it gps are not interested in helping. >:(

Hi poorboy. Thank you for the information about humankind organics products. I've been in touch with the lovely lady who produces them. She is extremely helpful and seems to know what we itchy, crusty people need since she has relatives and friends with the same problems. I'm going to try the shampoo, conditioner, the psoriasis cream and the foundation and so have placed an order for those. I'll report back when I've used them for a while.  Thank you again for the link.
