Alternative remedies 'dangerous' for kids says report

Alternative remedies can be dangerous for children and can even prove fatal, according to a study carried out in Australia.

The report warns of possible adverse reactions in youngsters who are given alternative remedies.

Researchers say parents sometimes think remedies are "more natural" with fewer side effects than conventional drugs.

But in nearly two thirds of the cases the side effects were rated as severe, life threatening or fatal.

The study, published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, looked at 39 separate incidents reported to the Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit between 2001 and 2003.

The children ranged from babies to 16 year olds.

Child deaths

In 30 cases, the issues were "probably or definitely" related to complementary medicine, and in 17 the patient was regarded as being harmed by a failure to use conventional medicine.

The report says that all four deaths resulted from a failure to use conventional medicine.

One death involved an eight-month-old baby admitted to hospital "with malnutrition and septic shock following naturopathic treatment with a rice milk diet from the age of three months for 'congestion'".

Inert remedies like homeopathy, even though they in themselves are harmless, can be life threatening when they replace effective treatments”

Edzard Ernst Professor of Complementary Medicine, University of Exeter

"Another death involved a 10-month-old infant who presented with septic shock following treatment with homeopathic medicines and dietary restriction for chronic eczema," the authors say.

One child had multiple seizures after complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) were used instead of anti-seizure drugs due to concerns about potential side effects.

The fourth death was of a child who needed blood-clotting drugs but was given complementary medicine instead.

The study found that parents used alternative therapies to treat anything from constipation to clotting disorders, and diabetes to cerebral palsy.
High and unacceptable rate

The authors, from the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, said: "Many of the adverse events associated with failure to use conventional medicine resulted from the family's belief in complementary and alternative medicine and determination to use it despite medical advice."

Dr William Van't Hoff, a consultant paediatrician at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, says this is an important, well constructed study that demonstrates "a high and unacceptable rate of adverse events" associated with the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

"It's important to note that the four deaths related to the failure of the family to use conventional medicine. Probably the most important risk is that families abandon or delay the use of conventional medicine and rely on CAMs.

"The second concern is that CAMs can interact with other medicines or have toxic effects. There's a presumption that these are natural remedies and families don't appreciate this and may even attribute the toxic effect to the conventional therapy."
'Nonsense'

Edzard Ernst, Professor of Complementary Medicine at Exeter University, says it is well known that alternative therapies can have side effects, especially in vulnerable groups like children.

"All of these treatments can have side effects but there's also a risk of alternative therapies replacing effective treatments.

"So inert remedies like homeopathy, even though they in themselves are harmless, can be life threatening when they replace effective treatments.

"Children don't make decisions themselves about their treatment; very often it is their parents, and parents can be misguided by the 50 million alternative medicine websites. The children are victims of lots of nonsense and false claims."

well, not just for kids...anyone.. but especially for kids ....i think there are many reasons that people use alternatives ..something not well addressed in the article...

some people are stupid..... and its hard to fix stupid
some people are poor......and can't see a doctor or afford drugs
some people are untreated...even with standard treatment they see little relief
and some are afraid...they are afraid of drugs, side effects, doctors  and pharma..sometimes for good reason

solving those are half the battle

also, once an alternative has shown some merit..which yes can be uncommon but it happens.. as an example ..vitamin D or adequate vitamins and minerals, or probiotics, prebiotics or diet changes,,gluten free , etc then its incorporated by standard medicine..especially if there is a profit aspect(.... my little bias),..so its a constant winnowing process...

.....in my personal world..i have seen quite a few near and dear that have suffered or died from months of chemo when no tumor existed only a scar, an unneeded pacemaker and death, diabetes drug (now off the market) causing liver failure and death, 4 years of avandia(now off the market) adding to CHF and death, Cyclo death, blood thinner resulting in fatal stroke...thats not to say there have not been many benefits also...lives have been saved, pain and suffering reduced etc..

Generally,  my family and myself are not big believers in alternatives beyond vits and diet... especially for children as there is a lot of garbage out there.....so i agree, think, use your head, read , ask a doctor rather then a neighbor, an internet poster or a naturalpath...whatever the hell that is..

not an excuse in the UK, we have the NHS and it does work; drugs are either free or very low cost (well at least until the current government start to dismantle it). In the UK alternative therapies (nearly all private practitioners) are way more expensive than conventional medicine.

yes , thats one of many things the brits can be proud of...we have a sick system over here...50 million without any healthcare,,millions more with poor care, high copays etc...greater numbers without prescription coverage...scratchys silkis would cost $500 for a small tube here...what father can afford that.

but worldwide..many don't have access to good medical care or drugs..so they fall prey to notions and potions or no treatment

it should be the law ..if a child is ill or even not thriving,  he must first see a medical doctor at least for a consult..then a doc can get the courts involved if its an emergency or there is negligence.. it is the law in some fashion in some areas.

Actually it cost me only 13€+some incredible&annoying statements about daily maximum dosage of vitD3 (to sum up: "2000 IU/vit D3??!!! a DAY ?!!! Are you at least a medical student or something to argue with me?! OMG, You must be out of your mind !! YOU SHOULD USE METHOTREXATE INSTEAD, IT IS MUCH SAFER!!WHAT?! ACCUTANE IS COMPLETELY SAFE, I GUARANTEE YOU THAT BOY!!"  :o...).

I think that for serious or life threatening conditions like infections, obstructed gall bladder, cancer, one should directly seek standard medicine. Alternative remedies like herbs, food and vitamins have a place for common, everyday problems like heart burn or colds, or chronic, non threatening conditions like arthritis and psoriasis. But before taking these remedies always try to find evidence that it works and is not harmful and has no side effects. An example is gingko biloba taken to improve memory, has been shown recently not to improve memory as they once thought, and can make your blood more fluid so it shouldn't be taken before surgery.

The same can be said for medications, some of which can have serious side effects like bj was saying. Before deciding whether to take them study them carefully for evidence of effectiveness and side effects, and see if there are alternatives like diet or vitamins that could do the same job. For example if one is diabetic, try first losing weight and modifying diet before taking any medications. For hypertension first try vitamin D, losing weight, exercise etc.

the problem is, there is no evidence available for most Alt therapies.  they are sold on their effectivenes by word of mouth, and most either have no empiical/scientific tests done to prove their effeciveness and/or side effects, or where tests have been carried out, the Alt therapy world have often dismissed the evidence stating that it is a indviidual holistic treatment and therefore each person has different mixtures of herbs/medications/doseage etc

with conventional medicines there is a rigerous testing process that they have to go trhough.  you can look up both the effectiveness and possible side effects and mae that educated decision whether the benefits outweigh the risks.  with Alt therapies it's a "suck it and see" approach both for effecicy nd side effects.  whereas many alt therapies will not harm you in themselves (a few drops of water are irrelevant and a massage is nice regardles of what is wrong with you ;) ), if taken INSTEAD of conventional medicine they can be fatal!

I'm not sure where you get your information from, but both diabetes and hypetension are killers.  especilly considering the article was written about children!  changing their diet or taking them for a run will not help one iota if your child has either of those conditions (and may hrm them) - they definitely need chemical medcation urgently.  sugesting any parent should try alt therapies before seeking conventional advice is dangerous in the extreme.
