"ODDS

98,000-140,000
killed by prescription
pharmaceuticals a year

77,000-88,000
killed by nosocomial infections
(getting tougher and tougher to control)

VS.

50,000 to 125,000
killed by colon cancer a year

Translation: the hospital is twice as likely
to kill as colon cancer
Estimated People Taking Herbs:
100,000,000

People Killed by Herbs: 40

Again I think I have been conservative
here. If we allow that high estimate of
100 deaths a year to herbs and supplements,
that tells me that only one in a
million people taking herbs is killed,
and even Guggliotta's article admits
that many of those are abusers. That
tells me the pharmaceuticals on a per
capitata basis are at least 1,000 times
more liable to lead to a fatality."

hi nick...you suggest critical thinking..but i see none only your opinion...show me a link, some good scientific studies, that show almost 400,000 killed by alternatives..compare that to  a harm rate of 20 out of every 100 admittances which is suggested by my study link.. ...i can prove my numbers...actually they are in medical journals...

also, under your patchwork list you can place anything including gardening, fishing, reading, or posting....means nothing other then you pick some alternatives that to many including myself  appear ludicrous ...but, except in the most extreme circumstances, i think the same for fumaderm, cyclo and mtx

good common sense should be the guide, not the government...better to let the government teach how, when and why to use good judgement

Hi bj ......it is very difficult to provide exact figures for Alt Medicine simply because the precise info just is'nt available in the public domain (which is unethical according to the Helsinki Declaration). Probably because Alt medicine is'nt properly regulated as we've discussed before and therein lies the problem. But i agree with you that good common sense should prevail but I do get concerned when those who are desperate are side tracked by misinformation which some areas of the Alt Medicine camp exploit ~ I'm sure you can understand that sentiment.

Hi MadCat ....... I'm not knocking the Alt Forum at all. Indeed I've personally benefited from using SLS/Paraben free products and Vit D3 so I've taken something from the Forum myself. But as you've shown very typically, the Alt Community generally are very stubborn when it comes to defending their herbs, fads and unscientific theories. I am allowed to question that, within reason ! Good to note that the placebo effect of your juicing etc has lasted so long  ;D

Placebo Effect..........after 2.7 years!

Really!!!

Oh well.

At least the so-called “placebo effect”.......... is free from the hideous side effects of medicated drugs.

Drug and side effect free – is all that matters in the end.

That is what we on the “alternative” mission are aiming for – a drug free result.

Thanks for the confirmation – however we choose to get there!

P.S. Please try better next time. Because after “scientific proof", ........the placebo effect, is normally next on the ANTI list,

You are certainly ticking off the boxes at this end   ;D

Keep up the absolutely excellent effort though – it is most impressive - and amusing.

Again Nicknackwack, I have to ask

As STILL not yet had a proper answer??!!

Why are you spending so much time on an alternative treatment site if you think alternative treatments are rubbish rip offs that don’t work?

I await your reply with bated breath.......... ;D

PMSL MadCat  ;D ;D ;D Now I understand why your GP offered you valium !!

Why do I spend most of my time in the Alt Forum ~ err well I don't. Check my profile statistics !! Why do you spend your time trolling 10 x health sites ?  :o That's weird !!

Anyway I'll leave you to ponder over this by Associate Professor Alastair MacLennan of Adelaide University, Australia regarding a patient who almost bled to death on the operating table after neglecting to mention that she had been taking "natural" potions to "build up her strength" before the operation, including a powerful anticoagulant that nearly caused her death.

To ABC Online, MacLennan said:

"And lastly there's the cynicism and disappointment and depression that some patients get from going on from one alternative medicine to the next, and they find after three months the placebo effect wears off, and they're disappointed and they move on to the next one, and they're disappointed and disillusioned, and that can create depression and make the eventual treatment of the patient with anything effective difficult, because you may not get compliance, because they've seen the failure so often in the past".

Go throw another shrimp on the barby and enjoy your carrot juice. BTW cherry juice does'nt help p  ;) Happy New Year  :-*

Well for someone who doesn’t spend much time on the ALT site.....you have spent rather a loooooooong time on this post debunking most alternative treatments.

What has some poor person nearly bleeding to death got to do with any of this anyhow?

I hardly call offering my help and assistance as trolling on other forums.

Although making sly digs about a persons character does tend to be next on the ANTI alternative agenda list, so really I would not expect anything less at this stage.

I don’t eat shrimps and have not attended a barbie for almost 20 years. I have no idea whether cherry juice really helps P or not (since I cleared on carrot/orange juice), although if studies are correct, cherry juice is meant to be very good for easing the pain of arthritis/gout.

My doctor recommend anti-depressants to me because I was depressed. Although like most doctors he didn’t bother to find out why I was depressed (being attacked and almost raped does tend to make you a teeny weeny bit depressed), he just pushed the drugs onto me. Luckily changing my diet and flower bach remedies helped with easing depression without any nasty potential side effects, another plus for alternative medicine.

Luckily I have not need to go from one alternative medicine to the next, I know what works for me and I tend to stick to it. And after 2.7 years of pretty much maintaining P clearance with diet, I very much doubt that it is the placebo effect.

BTW: I am not actually in Australia at the moment. And whether consuming carrot juice or champagne, I am bound to have a jolly and Happy New Years Eve.

Cheers.

EDITED TO ADD:

I just saw this signature on another forum and think I may have to steal it:

I am a troll. I live in a hole. I have a pet mole.

It makes no sense whatsoever, but it got me giggling.

And since I am now accused of being a trolling troll – rather perfect for my future 2011 posts.
