I must admit that after quite a bit of reading on flax oil I don't bother with it any more as the information points towards fish oil being a superior source of Omega 3. Fish oil conveniently comes already converted to DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). When taking flaxseed oil, your body takes the ALA and converts it into EPA and DHA through an enzymatic process. Unfortunately the conversion process isn't too efficient. Studies found men can only convert ALA to EPA by about 8%. The conversion of ALA to DHA was even lower at 0.1%. However I should add that there are concerns of toxic contaminants in fish (for example, mercury) but this shouldn't be an issue with a good quality product.
