Beetroot juice, could be excelllent for psoriasis
« on: March 19, 2006, 10:44:54 AM »
Not claiming a cure of anything here but i did some research into beetroot juice and its an excellent one glass a day way to get some good vitamins into your body, Partivularly FOLIC ACID, IRON and VITAMIN A all of which is linked to Psoriasis.

In a study of 50 people hospitalized with psoriasis, researchers found that some were low in protein, iron and folate (the naturally occurring form of folic acid), according to Janet Prystowsky, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Beetroot juice is a mjor source for folic acid, it also contains natural iron and it has lots of beta cartoene which the body converts into Vitamin A. Here is a rundown of what it contains:

Beetroot juice, made from raw beets, is an especially good addition to any green drink. Beetroot juice contains phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and potassium, as well as vitamins A and C, niacin, folic acid, and biotin. When these nutrients are captured in a juicing process, they remain in a form that is much easier to assimilate than synthetic nutrients. Beetroot increases the uptake of oxygen by as much as 400 percent.

Herbalists use beetroot for the following reasons:

LIVER SUPPORTIVE - Beetroot has long been used for medicinal purposes, primarily focusing on disorders of the liver. Beetroot would appear to have a blood cleansing effect as well as reducing liver stagnancy. Effects of beetroot on moistening the intestines and reducing constipation also encourages healthy liver function.
SKIN HEALTH - The rich antioxidant and silicon content of beetroot helps strengthen connective tissue and supports overall skin health. The powerful collagen supporting antioxidant anthocyanidin is also found in beetroot, this contributes to the deep pigment colour.
BLOOD BUILDING - Beetroot is useful source of bioavailable iron and contains other blood building factors such as folic acid. Beetroot has been shown to have a striking ability to increase cellular uptake of oxygen
CELLULAR PROTECTION - Research has shown an inhibitory effect of Beta vulgaris (beetroot) extract on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA), and has revealed a high order of activity compared to capsanthin, cranberry, red onion skin and short and long red bell peppers. Studies have also revealed a significant tumour inhibitory effect. The combined findings suggest that beetroot ingestion can be one of the useful means to help prevent cellular alterations.
TONIC EFFECTS - Beetroot has a long history of benefit as a tonic to both build up resistance and to treat convalescents after a serious illness. It is a nutritious and suitable tonic for the entire digestive tract.

WHAT TO BUY

Buy "ORGANIC" ONLY, "COLD PRESSED" and "unsweetened" or u wont be getting the stuff u need.
You need to drink a good medicinal quantity, which is about one large tumbler glass a day. Serve it chilled it's quite nice !
You can get it from health food shops (buy this i mean places that sell healthy/organic foods and not holland and barret etc) , or you can buy it online, from

PRICE - between £2 to £3 a bottle. U need to have about two or three bottles for a week so pre-buy a few.

p.s. as beetroot contains BIOTIN i thought i would mention if u have scalp/ facial psoriasis try one tablet of day (1000) of biotin I read some research (which I have now llost) which did a trial and had great results in removing it with this one very chea b vitamin. YOu can buy biotin from holland and barret at a very lowprice.

I do drink betroot juice and have been making beetroot soup. The only thing u have to be careful of is that large amounts of beetroot will turn you skin pink just like too much carrots will turn you orange. The beetroot will also make your urine turn pink.

I think this comes under the theory that if u eat beetroot and have a healthy gut then it will pass within 24 hours but a sluggish gut will take longer to expel the beetroot. So the quicker it goes through shows how quickly toxins go through the system but the longer they stay there the more trouble it can cause.

I havent noticed any chance in my p at all and I have been drinking beetroot juice for a number of weeks.

Thanks Stuart ... I drink EDEN organic beetroot juice  8-)
As you say ... they are a good liver & blood cleanser, higher in iron & trace elements than spinach & beneficial for skin problems aswell as constipation & digestive disorders.
They were also once used to treat TB.

All the best,
Jade  :)

btw, beetroots are pretty safe but if you are planning to go overboard with them its worth bearing in mind that they are also high in oxalic acid .. like spinach ... so eating too much can bind up the beet trace minerals like calcium  & iron so they can't be properly utilized.

Even too much of a good thing can be bad for you........
I am heavily in to cheese and beetroot sandwiches or beetroot and advocado salads at the moment - all hail the mighty beet!  I don't buy the picled variety though, yuch! all you taste is vinegar, I get the organic nothing added shrink wrapped ones, Tescos are the nicest tasting IMO
