Bleach and Vaseline Petroleum Jelly treatment
« on: August 14, 2011, 06:14:56 PM »
Hi all,
Its been a while since I've been in touch.
I lost serious heart in the green smoothie diet (which was when I was last here). I nearly lost my mind - it was too much. It didnt work and just caused me emotional pain.
For the last three days I've been on a new regime ...
I was googling about randomly the other day looking for further so-called home remedies for psoriasis and stumbled across these two.
The first one is a treatment whereby you soak in a bath with 1/2 a cup of bleach (for 10 minutes), RINSE, then when you get out and the skin is still wet, apply petroleum jelly. And keep applied PT 3-4 times a day for 2 weeks. I got inspired by these stories You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and   You are not allowed to view links. I ran a search here in this forum and was surprised to find nobody has mentioned these treatments in the past.
I know the bleach one sounds mad, but the chemicals are similar to the chlorine in pools, and when I swim my skin feels lovely afterwards. I have noticed some redness has gone down, but thats all so far.
If anyones done this, please let me know how you got on.

The type of bleach they use in the USA is called clorox. Its basically a chlorine bleach.

Not all bleaches are made from the same stuff.
You need to look for something that is around 6% sodium hypochlorite (not just sodium hydroxide).
And ideally not much else in it, unscented and no other chemicals if possible (soaps, perfumes etc etc).
Have you found a UK equivalent Spotty girl? Domestos is made from the same stuff but has a few other things i added i wouldnt wanna bathe in unless i had no other choice. I think TESCO own brand is the same stuff also.

The vaseline will mainly just act as a barrier and stop fresh bacterial infeciton on the skin.
So, if the bleach kills germs, and the vaseline seals the skin they may well work in tandem.

One other thing. I know it sounds daft but get your matress cleaned and then buy a dust mite matress protector. Make sure you cahange your sheets a few times a week. This will reduce dust mites and fungal bacteria expsoure.

Finally Ive heard some interesting things about adding glycine supplements to your regime. Take 1,000-3,000 just before going to bed on an empty stomach. It calms the body, allows it to sleep better and has some reports of helping the skin.

Hi Stewart,
Oh thats interesting. I'll have to check out the composition of the different brands of bleach. The one I bought was the large bottle, tesco own brand. It was 30p.
My skin does look about 40% less red, its quite surprising.
Its well-horrible having to be greasy with the petroleum jelly, especially under my work clothes this morning, but I'm prepared to stick with it.
Ive not heard of Glycine, will ask my colleague more about it as she's a nutritionist. Its difficult because theres probably 100's of natural tablets which 'benefit' the skin but you could end up taking them all. But I will definately look into it.
My mattress is fairly new already, I treated myself to a memory foam a few months back but will look into the mattress protector.
thanks

Woah, my mind boggles!

What were you doing exactly to lose your mind!

You are only meant to drink one green smoothie per day.......not live on the stuff 24/7.

Sound like maybe you over did the green stuff?

Personally I think bleach and vaseline petroleum jelly, are two of the very worse thinks you can allow to touch your skin, but that is just my opinion.

I know that many P sufferers find them useful. There is a clingwrap method that many people use but I don't know much about it, apart from seeing people rave about it on forums.

I don't suffer from insanity....I enjoy every minute of it!

clingwrap method simple, apply your moisuriser quite thickly, wind a couple of layers clingfilm round, leave on for 2/3 hours, soak in bath and light exfoliation with bath mitt. Even better if run hot water for bath through foot of some old tights with porridge and have good soak. Then re moisturise

Thanks for that explanation. I knew that people put Vaseline on their P and then covered it with clingwrap, but I was a bit vague about what happened next.

Does the clingwrap actually have a purpose? Or is it simply used to stop the petroleum jelly staining your clothes and sheets?

It helps to soften and remove flaking by using the trapped body heat to make better use of the moisturiser

I've been using bleach baths for the last 2 weeks now and have to say I am noticing a difference!

I managed to clear the patches from my legs (still some hyperpigmentation left but that's it) this summer using sparodic applications of coconut oil, glycerin and lots of sun, but it never seemed to have much effect on the more stubborn spots on my torso. So at the moment I only have the patches left on my torso and also pretty much entire coverage of my scalp too.

I've been bathing up to my neck for 10 minutes and then moisturising every 2-3 days (had my fifth bleach bath last night) in a full bath of water with about 80-90ml of domestos mixed in.

So far I've seen a noticable difference in redness and the patches seem to be breaking up somewhat from the centre outwards where new clear skin seems to be starting to emerge.

I don't have any pics of it 2 weeks ago but here the is progress so far:

Ahh, so like plants growing in a hot house / green house.

I thought the clingwrap would make you a bit sweaty - sweat use to really irritate my P - so I was wondering how it worked.

Could you also use tin foil or similar?

Hey. The regime I was on did involve having the smoothies all day. My moods were all over the place, I snapped at everyone, even people at work. It was probably one of the most depressing things I've had to do in my life. And the damn regime didnt even work, I continued to breakout. Not as much but I still did breakout enough
