Dairy - has anyone cut this out longer than 1 year
« on: January 31, 2012, 08:16:17 AM »
i was only going over some photos & omg cannot believe people are absolutely covered seriously i would be doing anything possible if i was like that - after going through some diets of these ppl i found not only very poor diet but 1 thing all in common - DAIRY - so my question is who has given up dairy - i don't think short term giving up something makes any difference - its over a longer term  that has more major effect - so who has done this given up dairy for 1 year and has your P got any better - for me it has - i cannot put it down solely to dairy but hey 7 cups of tea a day GONE - cereal milk GONE - pizza gone - cheeses gone - cake gone biscuits gone - i have done this for a year and to be honest im clear in winter time and there are no new spots coming - so i must be doing something right.. - let me know your thoughts..

I was on a strict Dairy free diet for over a year when I was in my teens and did not notice any improvement/ change in my Psoriasis, I was also eating healthy.

I've had some random periods of clearing and am currently experiencing a good level of clearing on a lower diary diet.  More importantly it's high soy ... I think diet is an important element to successful management of P but it's been a very very rocky road for me.  I've had periods of very strict elimination, I went without diary or eggs for about a year and found it helped ease my IBS.  It was during this period of strict elimination that my P first appeared ... I was however also the most stressed I have ever been in my life and had lost enough weight to make me look a bit odd.

So I've been on various 'diets' over the years and I guess I'm relatively healthy.    No 'fast food' (i.e. MacDonald or KFC or any of the other ones- haven't had either for about 20 years).  No potatoes (for the past 5 years).  No red or white meat (Since June/July last year).  I've cut down on diary - so I have soy milk instead of normal milk (that's been going for about 6 months).

I still eat small amounts of fish (on average once a week), cheese, yogurt & butter, and bread (mmm carbs).  Lots of veg and not much fruit.  And then there's soya ... lots and lots of soya.

Yesterday was a terrible diet day (was feeling unwell so didn't want to eat): Toast with home made marmelade, soya latte, welsh rarebit, three leftover quorn sausages and some soup.
Today has been better: naughty cup of tea, porridge (made with soy milk), soya latte - lunch is going to be a raw foods salad (with seeds and nuts on top) and some lentil soup, maybe an apple or a banana, not sure about dinner yet but probably steamed veggies and tofu.

However, most of my diet is aimed to give me relief from IBS.  The P is bad, it makes me unhappy but it doesn't leave me housebound.  So I do the barney's formula thing and then there's my soy thing ... it's working for now.  Fingers crossed it will keep working!

I'm not following a 'strict diet' at all but it's considered restrictive by some.  Everyone seems to have a slightly different set of conditions that triggered their P and also as a result a slightly different set of conditions that help to manage it.

To be honest I would be careful not to over do it with the soy/soya as it can actually be harmful.
Soy/soya can be genetically modified and it does not have to say it on the package/carton/box as its not the raw ingredient. If you google it you will see what I mean. I'm not saying this to scare you I'm just being realistic. We try to have a healthier diet but at the same time you don't want to be ingesting lots of chemicals.
Soy/soya products can be good in moderation but I would be very careful not to over do it.
Good luck!

I don't understand, why do you avoid white meat but still eat some fish?

Yes I know but I didn't say "What" white meat do you avoid, instead I asked "Why"?

Hi Dev

Frankly as long as the soy is helping I'm not too worried about it GM stuff.  It's all about balancing up the risks / benefits.

Can't be any worse than some of the medication I was on last year.

Hi Scratchy

Sorry - misunderstood the q.

Red meat and white meat (even fish if I eat too much of it) - makes my joints hurt.  I don't know exactly why that happens but since cutting out most meat I am not kept awake at night by pain in my fingers and wrists.  My right big toe no longer swells up and the pain in that joint is just gone.  My shoulders are still a little squeaky - especially the left - but that's slowly getting better too.

Over christmas I lifted the meat ban and my joints paid the price.   Been off meat since the 28th and it's all better.

Added bonus, my IBS is loads better too.
