derms
« on: January 26, 2012, 10:13:05 PM »
i went to see my derm today, i have seen 3 different ones now and they have all said the same thing. when ever i have asked them about diet they always say it plays no part, today he said it plays no part at all. why do they say this when clearly there is some evidence that it does? have other people had this aswell? has anyone ever had a derm say otherwise?

to me it must have a difference, what goes in must have an effect on the body so why wont this reflect in the health of our skin, just being dehydrated can effect the skin, so food must aswell.

im going to start with cutting out dairy, one food at a time take some good quality vit d tabs etc and see how it goes.

Yes.

I have had a derm say otherwise.

In the 1980s I saw an extremely well-respected private British derm who first told me about the diet connection.  He mentioned a few foods to avoid and dairy topped the list.

The free NHS derms and doctors I had seen prior to that had never mentioned it ~ so there may not be many derms that will advise you on diet, but there are certainly some.

I used the private derm to queue jump. I was in a very bad state psoriasis wise and needed immediate intensive hospital treatment, rather than just coal tar baths and steroid creams doled out by my normal GP. Being the NHS, there was at least a six month waiting list to see a free NHS specialist and even longer for a hospital bed. I could not wait that long as I was desperate. So I paid many ££££ to see a private derm and he had me in hospital within a matter of days.

However, he first advised me to change my diet and see him again for a review in six months time. He only put me into hospital as a second option because I refused to consider it.

So I am guessing he was treating most of his private patients with diet first. Being a poor unemployed teenager, I could not afford to visit a second time. I wrongly thought that the hospital would be a quick fix solution. It wasn't. I never went back to see him, as I could not really afford a private specialist and also I was not interested in making diet changes at that stage of my life.

Being a teenager in the 1980s and loving my processed foods, dairy, wheat, chocolate and alcohol, I totally ignored his advice and stuck with the "easy" route of medicated lotions, pills and potions. Having cleared with diet in 2008 and pretty much managed to maintain clearance ever since.......I wish I had paid more attention to him earlier, as it would have saved a huge amount of money and frustration.

Oh well, better late than never.  :)
