Fasting for better skin
« on: March 15, 2011, 10:01:13 PM »
I've been fasting since last week on and off(about 4-5 days of no food) by using hoodia powder and I have to say that I am seeing some skin improvements by itself. The notion is that if you don't eat , the body will focus only on essential tasks and slow down the cell proliferation and reduce inflammation. I am doing it for skin and for fat loss as I gained significant weight over the long and cold winter, I was 97kg last week  and now 92kg.My weight before winter was about 87 but I want to go down to 80 or even less  Mind you I am also taking vitamin d ,arginine, magnesium oil, B5, zinc and theanine as supplements, not at the same time though.

I have no idea what hoodia powder is.

But yes, fasting is a well-known method for treating many diseases, including skin conditions.

To be safe, make sure you drink enough fluids (water, juice, broth) throughout each day and reduce your daily activities. I find it best to fast over a holiday or weekend, where I can stay at home and relax.

Plain water fasting is the best method, but I simply can’t do it.

I can do a combined water & vegetable juice fast quite easily though.

I do a small fast every month. Last month I did a seven day longer fast for a different health issue. Trying to slowly build up to a longer one.

Hoodia is a natural plant from the african Kalahari desert. It behaves like glucose and interacts with hypothallamus in the brain so that it thinks that you are full and not hungry and it sees hoodia as glucose so this shuts down the hunger process but not fat burning. It also reduces gastric juices in the stomach so that you are not getting juicy and nervous or even thinking of food. It is used by african tribal people to stave off hunger and it works but only in the right dose. For me the dose is 10-15 grams daily in 3 doses of 5 grams each . It tastes more or less like dirt so I put them in capsules and take 6-8 at a time.  It reduces hunger significantly but you can still eat , it's just that you don't have to and if you are using it and you know what it does you really are not going to eat and you will be ok. While on hoodia , I do my daily activity with no problem and I drink only unsweetened lemonade and green tea sweetened with lemon and water of course. Juicing is too much sugar to be called fasting.

Yes, I know.

That is why I said that water fasting is the best method – and if you want to be through and correct: the only truth method of fasting.

If you want to be pedantic about it, the proper term to use is juice feasting.

The radical raw vegans always go crazy when I mention the words juice and fasting in the same sentence.

But I am not radical. To me, the term fasting simply applies to refraining from eating solid food or fibre, and only consuming fluid.

To me, it does not matter what that healthy fluid is (i.e.) water, vegetable juice or vegetable broth.

However, I can’t water fast.

But I can fast on vegetable juices and water, and it has huge health benefits for me.

"juice fasting" is definitelly not fasting as you are ingesting carbohydrates which is just like eating any other carbohydrate. Liquid food hits you faster and brings more immediate reward system from serotonin but also make you addicted to them, leading to obesity , depression and health issues. Fasting is just abstaining from any food as if you are marching accross the desert with no exceptions. I do use unsweetened lemonade though when fasting but I think it has very little carbs like 1 gram per glass

I think fasting once in a while is a good thing, ... I wish I had the guts to do it.   ::)  And it should help psoriasis.  Remember, Nazi concentration camp psoriatics enjoyed remission ... before they died.

As for juicing, I think you are making too much of a generalize statement Vladex.  Juicing fruits in quantity and frequently is certainly not a good thing.  But if one juices predominately vegetables and adds just enough juiced fruit to make it palatable one won't get a sugar rush, get obese, etc.  Exercising restraint is important.  And the advantages of juiced veggies are tremendous.

don't be starting another internet myth now ..it wasn't nazi concentration camps, it was Japanese POW and labor camps...including starving populations and even those results are in question

Um yes, as I previously said:    its proper term is juice feasting.

You could also use the term juice detox.

But if you want to be really pedantic and anal retentive about it – taking hoodia powder and unsweetened lemonade cannot be classed as true fasting either.

Since “true” fasting only applies to taking in pure plain 100% water and nothing else.

Look I am not going to argue the nitty gritty with you. That is just a waste of time and too pathetic for words.

The title of your post is fasting for better skin. And yes I am agreeing that fasting has long been proven and used to improve many health conditions, including psoriasis.

Personally I have had many attempts to do water fasts but I always fail. As I always feel uncomfortable and unhappy whilst doing it.

On the other hand, I find it very easy to abstain from solid food for five days and feast on just pure fresh vegetable juices and water. These feasts make me feel good emotionally, physically and spiritually.

I have used these fast/feasts specifically to treat niggling health issues and they always work well for me. We have a flu epidemic in town and I had started to feel a bit off, so I did a juice feast for four days and was perfectly fine afterwards, even though my entire office was desperately ill.

I can assure you that I am not addicted to juice feasting, I have absolutely no obesity issues (although I did before I started juicing), and contrary to what you claim, juice feasting makes me feel happy (not depressed) and works exceptionally well for health issues.

This is the sort of thing that drives me nuts within the radical raw vegan community. They are always arguing the finer points and they are so bloody pedantic about using proper terms and they and get so caught up in arguing their point........the message gets completely lost.

So to get back to the point, the title of your post is fasting for better skin. And yes I am agreeing that fasting has long been proven and used to improve many health conditions, including psoriasis.

But in the end, how a person chooses to abstain from solid food to do the fast, should be neither here nor there. AS LONG AS IT WORKS FOR THEM!

* You choose hoodia powder and unsweetened lemonade - it works
* I choose celery and other vegetable juice and water - it works
* My friend chooses vegetable broth, herbal tea and water - it works

Hooray! It works. End of story!
