Fishoil capsules and cholesterol
« on: February 22, 2004, 07:56:08 PM »
Since taking fish oil capsules my p has been a lot better.
Unfortunately my cholesterol levels (which always used to be fine) have risen :-/ (noticed during routine check up because of PA-meds).
It's not threatening, but noticeable.
So I thought I cut down on the fishoil capsules (package says due not use when elevated cholesterol), but my p instantly get worse again >:(
I don't know what is worse - bad cholesterol or p ???

Any experiences with that?
If so - what do you do?

Grateful for any advice,

sheepful :)

Annika,

Did you ever try the flaxseed capsules instead of fish oil?

Hi hun

I've stopped taking mine too as the doc said i should stop until i've had my gallbladder out.

My boyfriend's mum has been told to stop taking hers too as it's increased her cholsterol and made her put on weight.  She takes it to ease her joints and is really stiff now.

It's the lesser of 2 evils in this one i think  :-/

I am also taking fish oil caps. My p, for this time of year ie. late winter, is the best its ever been. A lot if it is so flat I can't even feel it and I've almost stopped shedding flakes. Am also doing the Danone thing so not sure which is responsible. Maybe neither, it could just be a natural regression, but I'm carrying on with both of them anyway! Will get cholesterol checked next time I'm with GP tho' but I'm certainly happy with my p for now (or as happy as anyone can be with this thing!)

Found this.......

Possible side effects
Fish oil capsules may cause belching, flatulence, bloating, nausea and diarrhoea. Very high doses may result in a slightly fishy body odour. There is some concern that high doses can lead to internal bleeding, but a study of people with heart disease who took 8000 mg of fish oil supplements in addition to aspirin (an anticoagulant) found no increase in the incidence of internal bleeding. Some studies have found that high doses of fish oils worsen blood sugar control in people with diabetes; others have shown no effect. To be safe, diabetics should not take more than 2000 mg of fish oil supplements a day except on medical advice. Individuals with high levels of triglycerides should be careful if they also have high LDL ('bad') cholesterol: therapeutic doses of fish oils can increase LDL. Garlic supplements may be the remedy. One study found that garlic reversed the fish oils' LDL-raising effect. For rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, eating fish is probably not sufficient, and fish-oil supplements are recommended.

Seems like to have these effects you must be prone to them anyway.

They don't warn you about any of these things on the boxes. My capsules are 'high strength'. Maybe I'll reduce it a bit. Don't fancy walking around smelling like a mackerel!

And maybe as a positive side effect the garlic odour would cover the fish odor as well ::)

....ugh - yuck I shouldn't have written this out :P It was okay thinking it, but writing it has definately kind of made me feel sick now :P :P

Actually I bought mine in a pharmacy ... and the box does warn :-/

Another sign of the benefits and backdraws of health food stores I guess :-/ :-/

Why is it when I think I am doing something right it appears I'm doing something wrong.  I've been throwing fish oil capsules down my throat!! Oh and garlic and probably far too many vitamins along with my danome - aaagghh and needless to say p is rampant and not responding - happy days!!!   ;D

I can't do right for doing wrong,

I'm on acitretin and my last derm visit chol level was up, she told me to substitute my beloved cheese with oily fish like tuna or salmon.I went one step better, I thought, by taking 1000mg of cod liver oil a day.

Maybe I should stop ???
