Flour?
« on: July 11, 2004, 10:46:40 PM »
Anyone heard of this one...

A couple of weeks ago I went to see my friends from a course I was doing before I had the baby, two new women had started who are from the Congo, they said that people in the Congo who suffer from P mix a paste from a special kind of flour and lay it on the afflicted areas and the P disapears.  Unfortunately, the flour is not readily available at Sainsbury's!  It's from the Congo, and I don't even know if it has a name!  Has anyone else heard of this or similar?

Just did a search for "congo flour" and it came up with a flour made from manioc (cassava) roots.  Here's a link, don't know if its the right one!

Elaine, I bet you are right. Gari is the staple food in southern Nigeria which is a tropical rain forest area like the Congo. Gari is a a sort of porridge made from Cassava flour. One interesting thing about Cassava is that the flour is made from cooked roots of the plant which are highly poisonous unless subjected to a lot of heat. The heat drives off the prussic acid (a cyanide compound) in the root making it safe to grind into a flour to eat. I wonder how many people died trying to find a safe way of eating cassava.
