Some of these Health Gurus are a laugh a minute...

About 8 million Americans endure physical and emotional pain inflicted by the skin ailment psoriasis. Psoriasis is not contagious, but is often hereditary. This condition is linked to a rapid growth of cells in the skins' outer layer, causing round, reddish skin patches with silvery scales. In severe cases, the entire surface of the body can be disfigured with painful cracks among patches of scaly skin. Despite continued research, scientists have yet to find a precise cause of this condition.

According to The Optimum Nutrition Bible, by Patrick Holford, psoriasis may be linked to a candida infection or digestive problems. Many experts recommend a cleansing diet to help alleviate the problem, since the buildup of toxins in an unhealthy colon also may be a factor.

Dry skin conditions, such as psoriasis, is often a sign of fatty acid imbalance. Your skin cells need to have healthy cell membranes to prevent moisture loss, capture nutrients and keep toxins away. Fatty acids are necessary for this and to help keep skin cells strong and functioning properly. If you aren't eating enough of the right fats, chances are your skin will be dry as a result. In the majority of cases, fatty acid imbalance occurs because a person eats too many omega-6 fats, found in such products as corn, soy, canola, safflower and sunflower oil, and not enough omega-3 fats. These two types of fat, omega-3 and omega-6, are both essential for human health, however, the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is 1:1. Our ancestors evolved over millions of years on this ratio. Today, though, our ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 averages from 20:1 to 50:1!

James Balch, M.D. and Phyllis Balch, C.N.C., Prescription For Nutritional Healing, consider psoriasis to be a result of faulty utilization of fat, since the disease is rare in countries where the diet is low in fat. Current research also indicates the immune system may play a role. Supplements that may be beneficial include flax and evening primrose oil, zinc, magnesium, and antioxidant nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E. The publication Prescription For Nutritional Healing also lists Ultimate Oil from Nature's Secret to be "essential" in treating psoriasis.

An extract from a book review of Patrick Holford & Natalie Savona's, "Solve Your Skin Problems", by June Butlin, MBANT, M.Sc., Ph.D....

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Dietary guidelines are discussed in section 4 and they map out a two-week skin detoxification diet with high levels of fruits, vegetables and water, limited grains, fish, meat and oils, and avoidance of gluten grains, sugar, salt and hydrogenated fats.

External skin care is also advocated with cleansing, moisturising, protecting and exfoliating dead skin cells being of prime importance.

Natalie and Patrick's recommendation of propylene glycol for moisturising oily skin would make most natural skin care enthusiasts cringe. This chemical is used in the industrial world as antifreeze, brake and hydraulic fluid and can actually cause dermatitis, and damage to cell membranes causing rashes and dry skin, and has been shown to inhibit skin cell growth in human tests.

For those with limited knowledge of nutrition and for those who have not read any of Patrick's previous books, "Solve your skin problems" provides some useful knowledge, suggestions and guidelines.

However, others may be left with the impression of having read all this before, and that they frustratingly just want to know more! - [No worries - Patrick will just write another book]
